Role of FoE in LEAPS / PSSP Rafael Abela/Britta Redlich/Mirjam van Daalen:: Role of FoE in LEAPS / PSSP FoE SC Meeting Frascati

Goal of PSSP / LEAPS Meeting with RJ Smits ICRI 2016 Cape Town Mail Helmut Dosch, Andrew Harrison PSSP prep TelCo 26.10.2016 Didcot meeting PSSP 14-16 November

Roadmap PSSP/LEAPS Meeting with RJ Smits ICRI 2016 Cape Town Strong encouragement of LEAPS/PSSP initiative. Quite timely, as the consultations workshops to shape FP9 have started Need to develop a joint LEAPS roadmap very soon by autumn 2017 Should in particular include: technology roadmaps for advanced detectors/sensors, advanced optics, advanced accelerator concepts Should contain: standards in performance Should give clear answers how to promote innovation RJ promised to include LEAPS into his proposal for FP9, consultation in Brussels latest November 2017. Plans ready by summer 2017 and in parallel prepare the consultation. FoE should be well prepared for PSSP prep TelCo 26.10.2016 and Didcot meeting PSSP 14-16 November

Roadmap PSSP/LEAPS Principal areas of discussion of strategy will include the following: Analysis of a new scheme to attack key societal challenges through the provision of beamtime by European SR or FEL facilities, supported by the Commission, to consortia or networks of the strongest groups in academia and industry (Helmut to lead on this) A programme to engage more widely and effectively with industry - building on WP3 (led by Andrew) A technological development programme based on WP5 (lead by Jean and Edgar) Addressing the Commission’s ‘RI sustainability’ agenda (Andrew to lead – but this will also touch on other WPs such as WP4 for outreach and learning) Engagement with e-infrastructures – challenges and opportunities – where we are still trying to identify someone to join us for the meeting to present and lead discussion.

Role of FoE in PSSP/LEAPS Integrate FoE in LEAPS roadmap Further development of FEL facilities over the next 5-10 years 65% of the FEL facilities are user facilities, make table with facilities that only do R&D, important tasks e.g. Daresbury, INFN How do we react on the FEL developments in the US?: LCLS II, LCLS high energy Roadmap EU XFEL, switch to CW mode? Otherwise no alternatives in EU? New FEL schemes e.g. wake field acceleration

FoE role in PSSP / LEAPS Advanced accelerator concepts: Wake field CW mode Relation ELI and FoE? Development of new facilities: TARLA, POLFEL, SFEL, LUNEX5,....

FoE role in PSSP / LEAPS Roadmap FELs of Europe, based on whitebook Technology: detectors, advanced optics, accelerators Socio economic impact: Elettra, FERMI? European Science Cloud, Big Data, Data Policy, etc. Ensure presentation and exploitation of PaNdata, PaNDaaS, DaaS Define „added value of small (non X-ray ?) facilities“: FELIX, FELBE, INFN, TARLA, CLIO Broaden the users community of FoE: With conferences like Science@FELs, PhotonDiag With grants and awards Industrial users: PSI, ESRF, Diamond

FoE role in PSSP / LEAPS FoE role in PSSP / LEAPS – timely and urgent Discussion tomorrow morning! Please give it a thought!
