The Commercialisation of Public Bike Share business models Panel session # 2 (Thursday 27-Sept.) The Commercialisation of Public Bike Share business models

PEBSS Platform for European Bicycle Sharing & Systems ECF gratefully acknowledges financial support from the European Commission. PEBSS Platform for European Bicycle Sharing & Systems Planet Earth Bicycle Sharing & Systems Paul Stratta Director PEBSS pebss@ecf.com

PEBSS – the what, and why An intra-industry forum /stakeholder platform. Finding the sweet spot within industry collaboration and level-playing ground competition. Stimulate an exchange of "best practices" across the shared bicycle mobility community. Provide cities with good guidance. Place shared bicycle mobility at the centre of EU-wide policy and funding discussions on urban mobility and transport strategy, accelerating cycling usage in Europe. (1+1=3) Make bicycle sharing systems a catalyst of Smart City innovation, and fundamental to Smart(er) Mobility. (e.g. MaaS)

PEBSS – the who, and when ;-) Shared Bicycle Mobility encompasses so much more than "simple" bike sharing schemes. We also embrace peer-to-peer system facilitators, corporate leasing, cargo and rickshaw services, and related suppliers, data providers, tech companies, and stakeholders. Essentially, any form of smart (or dumb), shared access to a bicycle.

PEBSS – founding members + our Cities for Cyclists network

PEBSS supported / facilitated by -> THE cycling advocacy organisation (NGO) in Europe dedicated to promoting cycling as a sustainable and healthy means of transportation. “We believe the bicycle is a solution to many of the worlds' woes.” Increased EU funds dedicated to cycling from € 600M -> € 1.5B Specifically engaged in € 28M worth of projects over the last 5 years. ECF delivers free training to hundreds of transport planners, cycling advocates, and city / government offices.

ECF’s networks -> Cities for Cyclists Scientists for Cycling Cycling Industry Club EuroVelo Cycling Forum Europe World Cycling Alliance Project Partners Moving Cycling innovation into the policy mainstream, attracting political support and new Central investments. ECF’s report to the EU on the Economic Benefits of Cycling documented some € 513B / year in real economy activity.

Panel II: Commercialisation of PBS business models Is there now only “one” way to generate a bike share business? How hybrid (or singular) is yours? Should cities care? Full transparency? Sources of Revenue to Develop… E.g. Sensorisation of PBS for Smart Cities Private (vs. Public) Bike Share? ¿minimum pricing standards? Do we benefit from diverse, multi- dependent, inter-connected, and self- reinforcing public-use bike share?
