How did Mao Zedong impact China? Notes #39

Beginning in 1949 under Mao Zedong, a communist government was set up to lead China, which denied basic rights and freedoms of the Chinese people.

Mao’s and China’s communist view of government was similar to the Confucian view of government in that both stressed loyalty to government.

As a result, China’s communist government discouraged organized religions because they competed for the loyalties of the Chinese people.

In 1958, Mao launched the Great Leap Forward in an attempt to increase China’s agricultural and industrial output . . .

. . . by dividing China into communes, which ended up severely hurting China’s economy. An estimated 30 million Chinese people died of starvation (1958 – 1961)

In 1966, Mao launched the Cultural Revolution to eliminate any opposition to himself and his government.

As a result of the Cultural Revolution, China’s economic and educational systems were disrupted.
