Recall…What is an adaptation?  A trait an organism has that helps it survive in its environment.
So what does evolution mean? Well, The Book Says:
Evolution How do organisms change over time?
Change Over Time Galapagos Islands
 What does domestic mean?  Domestic: no longer wild, but has been bred or tamed by humans.  What are some other reasons why domestic animals are important.

Natural Selection. What is natural selection? Natural selection is the process by which certain individuals of a species are better adapted to the environment.
Natural Selection Page 59. Mutations Errors in DNA that typically occur when a cell divides- accidental and random! Sometimes, mutations produce a new.

Presentation transcript:

What is the driving force of evolution? (Natural Selection)

How does this relate to the Galapagos Islands?

Galapagos Islands 13 species of finches Resemble one finch from South America One species  13 species? Adapted to various habitats Different beaks = different food (read caption) How did these different beaks arise? Darwin’s theory of NATURAL SELECTION

Natural Selection Natural Selection- The process by which individuals that are better adapted to their environment are more likely to survive and reproduce than other members of the same species. “Survival of the Fittest”. Variation- Any difference between individuals of the same species.

Natural vs. Artificial Selection Artificial Selection- When humans choose desired traits and breed organisms. Artificial Selection Ex: Breeding dogs. Natural Selection Ex: The Peppered Moths

Review Questions 1. What is an adaptation? How might an adaptation benefit a species? 2. What is variation? 3. What is natural selection? What factors might cause a change in a species over time?
