Hanivharot "The chosen”/team Gender (In-) Equality in Higher Education: Strengthening Institutional Capacity to Promote Female Academics The Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, 17.1.17 Adv. Orna Kopolovich, Advisor to the President of HIT on women's advancement in academia (gender equality)

Hanivharot - "The chosen” / team Rationale Women comprise 58% of students and are a majority in all degrees Yet… The “scissors phenomenon / effect” (exclusion of women in the higher ranks) prevails, especially in STEM*-related positions, both in academia and industry In addition to… Inequality in terms of employment, including up to a 30% gap in salary (2016 Gender Index, ‘Shavot’ Center for Advancement of women in the Public Arena, Van Leer Institute, Jerusalem) *STEM: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics

Hanivharot - "The chosen” / team Snapshot Is a Technology-oriented Institute In 2016 there were a total 3,792 students (373 of them - Graduate/Master’s degree) 34% of them – women (typical in STEM subjects)

Hanivharot - "The chosen” / team Distribution of Students in 2016

Hanivharot - "The chosen” / team Distribution of Students in 2016

Hanivharot - "The chosen” / team At we train and prepare our graduates for a successful integration into the industry / workforce Men have a better chance to reach top / executive levels The Challenge! What is lacking? How can we better equip our (female) students to cope with these predicaments? How can we increase the number of (female) students in the STEM disciplines (in general and at HIT)?

Hanivharot - "The chosen” / team Our contribution: A unique, novel project - a “package deal” Scholarships - financial support Broad / encompassing knowledge & “tools” Workshops and lectures on Financial / legal / social (general & gender-related) issues Negotiation techniques Mentorship – academic & professional (Inspirational & practical) Part of an embracing community -“sisterhood” & networking circles A project combining a contribution to the (general) community in collaboration with the industry
