Natural Selection pp. 297-301

NATURAL SELECTION four main supporting ideas 1. Overproduction: environment limits how big the population can get

2. Genetic variation: not all organisms have the exact same trait EX. Some stronger, faster, different color, etc.

Most traits arose due to mutation in the population long ago and now Only increase in frequency due to the change in the environment

3. Struggle to survive: individuals compete for resources and certain traits make an individual more successful adaptation: a trait in a population passed onto offspring that makes them better suited

4. Differential reproduction: organisms with the best adaptations are more likely to survive and pass on those traits fitness: ability of an organism to survive to pass on genes

ARTIFICIAL SELECTION Humans breed for specific traits causing differences in species (i.e. dog breeding)

SEXUAL SELECTION Humans choose mates based on specific traits and those traits increase in the population
