Maps and Globes Globe Maps A three-dimensional representation of the earth. Maps These are two-dimensional representations of the earth’s surface. There are three different types of maps Reference maps, thematic maps, and navigational maps.

Making Maps Surveying This is the first step in making a map You must observe, measure, and record what you can see in a specific area. (this is now done mostly by satellite) Data gathered includes elevation, differences in land cover, and variations in temperature. This info can then be converted into maps.

Tools Satellites Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Satellites are used to gather data that can help map the surface of the earth. This data helps geographers to create accurate maps. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) This is a system that holds maps, aerial photos, satellite images, and other data that help geographer’s decide how to solve problems.

Tools Global Positioning System (GPS) It was originally developed to help military forces know exactly where they were on earth’s surface What other applications does it have?
