It's Easy to Showcase Your Work with Digital Commons and SelectedWorks Presented at Library Live by Liz Richardson, Document Delivery and Institutional Repository Manager October 14, 2016

It's Easy to Showcase Your Work with Digital Commons and SelectedWorks (Room 333, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.) Session Description Digital Commons @ Kent State University Libraries is Kent State's institutional repository (IR), highlighting and providing access to the scholarship of KSU's multi-campus system in digital format, arranged by department, campus or institute.  SelectedWorks is a platform for presenting a library of an individual faculty member's published works, presentations, handouts and other products of research or teaching.  Attend this session to learn the advantages of including your work in Digital Commons and SelectedWorks and how to submit your work to be included in both.

Digital Commons @ Kent State University Libraries What is Digital Commons? Digital Commons @ Kent State University Libraries is Kent State University's Institutional Repository, a platform for the preservation and promotion of the academic output of our multi-campus system. The purpose of Digital Commons @ Kent State University Libraries is to publicize, disseminate, and preserve the scholarly work of Kent State University scholars and affiliates in an open access environment for the purpose of shared knowledge and learning. As Kent State University’s Institutional Repository, ideally the goal of Digital Commons is to collect and provide access to ALL scholarly output of Kent State University.

SelectedWorks - What is SelectedWorks? SelectedWorks is a platform for presenting a library of an individual faculty member's published works, presentations, handouts and other products of research or teaching. Works entered in Digital Commons can be imported to your personal SelectedWorks page!

Digital Commons @ Kent State University Libraries SelectedWorks A virtual library and research network for your scholarship SelectedWorks Gallery (Video) Introduction to SelectedWorks: https://works.bepress.com/learn/

Digital Commons @ Kent State University Libraries Why not just use a social networking site? Institutional repositories such as Digital Commons provide a stable, reliable, highly discoverable (optimized for Google)  medium for scholarly communication. Sites such as ResearchGate and Academia.edu are well-known and have millions of subscribers--including spammers, scammers, predatory publishers, fake and unreviewed research, and student scholarship not identified as such. Digital Commons contains student scholarship and identifies it as such. Social media sites do not check for copyright and licensing permissions (see example on this slide) and may be in violation of such. Digital Commons - we check copyright. You can set up your SW page or we can get it started for you. Items entered in Digital Commons will import directly into your personal page. Digital Commons Network – find research and researchers at other institutions Detailed Reports of your downloads: Author Dashboard
