LAST YEAR CERTIFICATION CLINIC TALK TO YOURSELF CONSTANTLY TRACKING ROTATION LAST YEAR CERTIFICATION CLINIC TALK TO YOURSELF CONSTANTLY
TRACKING ROTATION Certification Booklet pages 8-9 PowerPoint on Arbiter to assist you
TRACKING ROTATION Watch warm-ups Setter front row or back row Identify the setter(s) Start simple, setter and opposite Setter front row or back row Keep repeating it to yourself Listen to players Look to see where they go after playing the ball
TRACKING ROTATION QUESTIONS Memorize four positions in order, starting with the setter Memorize opposites; setter & opposite and the two middles Whatever works for you Yes, we all loose track of players with or without a card QUESTIONS
THEN MAKE THE CORRECT CALL TRACKING ROTATION If you missed a foot fault on the serve and awarded the point to the serving team, then you notice line judge calling foot fault, would you then change your mind and reward the point to the receiving team? If you missed an illegal attack or block then recognized the player going to his/her back row position - THEN MAKE THE CORRECT CALL
DOUBLES ILLEGAL HIT VERBIAGE WHEN COMMUNICATING BALL HANDLING DOUBLES ILLEGAL HIT VERBIAGE WHEN COMMUNICATING
HAVING SECOND THOUGHTS ON BALL HANDLING HOW TO VIEW IT RETHINKING WHAT WE CALL
DOUBLES “SPIN DOES NOT DETERMINE A DOUBLE” A Serve spins, passes spin and attacks spin QUIT WATCHING THE BALL (this alone will help improve your calls and consistency) When the ball goes up, “what’s it going to do wrong” Look ahead for the next contact Focus on the hands, see the hands contact the ball Don’t watch the ball contact the hands See the ball come into the hands
DOUBLES A back-set that rotates or spins backwards Coaches want double every time Not necessarily a double Setter contact may have been to far under the ball causing the rotation First ball DOUBLE CONTACT is legal 2 separate attempts to play ball on first contact “IS A DOUBLE”
DOUBLES Third contact DOUBLES Establish your line and BE CONSISTANT We tend to relax and miss the double on third contact Establish your line and BE CONSISTANT Don’t set a line so tight you can’t maintain consistency
DOUBLES When responding to captain (R1) or coach (R2) Use correct verbiage Short answers then move on Fans come to watch the match not you making calls Experience! Experience! Experience!
RETHINKING ILLEGAL HITS Verbiage “Prolonged Contact” Blocked ball that rebounds into net, then the same player plays the ball up “IT’S NOT NECESSARILY AN ILLEGAL HIT”
RETHINKING ILLEGAL HITS Ball played low and/or in front of chest What’s the difference whether the ball is played high (short and quick above head) or low (short and quick below chest-line) LEGAL? ILLEGAL? Playing ball with an open hand Attacked balls are played with open hand Why not popping the ball up
RETHINKING ILLEGAL HITS Balls trapped against the net “Illegal hit”
There are those plays that we have seen BALL HANDLING We have all had that moment Where we see the double and the whistle doesn’t blow Where the whistle blows and we say “why did I do that” LAST - There is no call for “UGLY” There are those plays that we have seen
ALL BALL HANDLING DECISIONS R2’s may assist the R1 With discrete signals on ball handling ALL BALL HANDLING DECISIONS ARE MADE AND CALLED BY THE “R1”
BALL HANDLING Debriefing after a match is a great opportunity to discuss ball handling. No one calls a perfect match. There is always at least one play that can be discussed and it is a great opportunity to educate less experienced officials.
HAVE A GREAT SEASON
