Creation of the CDPP In 1998, taking into account (i) the risk of loosing some data and (ii) the progresses of communication technologies, the CNES and the CNRS decided to create the CDPP, Centre de Données de Physique des Plasmas (Plasma Physics Data Centre) Missions: Retrieve and archive the data on solar system plasmas obtained with experiment realised with French participation, and assure their long term preservation Make available to the archived data and develop services for providing added value Participate to international project of archiving and information system (Virtual Observatories) Stimulate scientific activities and animation around archived data

Archiving activities at CDPP Retrieve the data Get information and documentation on the data  critical for ancient data Build a data system An organised database, including data, description and documentation A formatted data description  data model + metadata dictionary A data retrieval system A search engine About 300 datasets are archived at CDPP coming from ancient (GEOS, ISEE, ARCAD, …), recent (INTERBALL) or in-flight (CLUSTER, WIND, ULYSSES, DEMETER, …) missions. The short term data ingestion planning includes planetary plasma data coming from GIOTTO, CASSINI, MEX, VEX)

Services Search engine on the database Search, access and extraction of data from distant sites (now: CDAWeb; soon: MEDOC, BASS2000 and MAPSKP-CESR) via web-services or others Recent evolution at CDPP, in the goal to develop tools and services: Creation of a simplified database, standardisation of the data and of their description in order to use them in automated and generic tools The CDPP has developed a new data format, adapted to both archiving and automated data exploitation The CDPP has realised and made available AMDA, a service for Automated Multi-Dataset Analysis (http://cdpp-amda.cesr.fr)

AMDA (Automated Mutiple Dataset Analysis) http://cdpp-amda.cesr.fr Integrated system allowing to access and exploit multi-set data and time tables, on line, in interactive, semi-automated or fully automated ways. The system does not work with files but with objects Functionalities: Automated access to data Computation of parameters edited by the user Visualisation. Edition of generic figures Automated conditional search in respect with criteria edited by the user Semi-automated search. Visual search Access to CDPP and CDAWeb data (web-services) Time Tables  -Exploitation of vast databases. Extraction of sub-databases. -Exchange between databases, centers or severs. -Search, caracterisation, classification of events Construction of catalogues Statistical, systematical, historical studies

CDPP activities related to the development of Virtual Observatories (VO) The CDPP is one of the founder member of SPASE (Space Physics Archive Search and Extract ) The CDPP got recently involved in the EuroPLANET/IDIS N7 action, as the co-leading institute of the plasma node the final goal is to develop a plasma node (i) managing distributed resources related to planetary plasma data/services and (ii) providing multiple interfaces in order to communicate with the other planetary thematics (nodes) and heliophysics VOs The CDPP develops collaboration with data centres (CDAWeb, CAA, MAPSKP-CESR, MEDOC, BASS2000) and VOs in US for developing interoperability and services offering to the community time/energy saving and increase of the data exploitation performance

Conclusion The CNES and the CNRS have deployed a common effort for creating and supporting the CDPP in order to archive solar system plasma data, including planetary plasma data (soon GIOTTO, MEX, VEX, CASSINI) to build organised and active database making available the data for the community to provide services of added value and to develop interoperability in the perspective of the up-coming Virtual Observatories.
