The Response of Righteousness 9 The Response of Righteousness

Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called, - Ephesians 4:1

Summary Prayer to enable them to experience blessings in Christ Reminder of blessings given to Gentiles Obligations of new life Maintain unity

Elements of Unity Each member equally shares: Body = Church Spirit = Holy Spirit Hope = Heaven Lord = Jesus Faith = Word Baptism = Water Father = God

Obligations of New Life Preserve Unity Pursue Holiness

17 So this I say, and affirm together with the Lord, that you walk no longer just as the Gentiles also walk, in the futility of their mind, 18 being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart; - Ephesians 4:17-18

and they, having become callous, have given themselves over to sensuality for the practice of every kind of impurity with greediness. - Ephesians 4:19

20 But you did not learn Christ in this way, 21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, just as truth is in Jesus, 22 that, in reference to your former manner of life, you lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, - Ephesians 4:20-22

23 and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. - Ephesians 4:23-24

Features of a Righteous Life Proper attitude towards others

Features of a Righteous Life A. Sincerity Therefore, laying aside falsehood, SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR, for we are members of one another. - Eph. 4:25

Features of a Righteous Life B. Peacefulness 26 BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity. - Eph. 4:26-27

Features of a Righteous Life C. Responsible He who steals must steal no longer; but rather he must labor, performing with his own hands what is good, so that he will have something to share with one who has need. - Eph. 4:28

Features of a Righteous Life D. Gracious Speech Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. - Eph. 4:29

Features of a Righteous Life E. Mercy 30 Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. - Eph. 4:30-31

Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. - Ephesians 4:32

Features of a Righteous Life Proper attitude towards others A higher quality of life

1 Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children; 2 and walk in love, just as Christ also loved you and gave Himself up for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a fragrant aroma. - Ephesians 5:1-2

But immorality or any impurity or greed must not even be named among you, as is proper among saints; - Ephesians 5:3

and there must be no filthiness and silly talk, or coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks. - Ephesians 5:4

3 Types of “Talk”: Filthiness Talk Silly Talk Coarse Talk

For this you know with certainty, that no immoral or impure person or covetous man, who is an idolater, has an inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. - Ephesians 5:5

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. 7 Therefore do not be partakers with them; - Ephesians 5:6-7

for you were formerly darkness, but now you are Light in the Lord; walk as children of Light - Ephesians 5:8

(for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth), - Ephesians 5:9

trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. - Ephesians 5:10

11 Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them; 12 for it is disgraceful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. - Ephesians 5:11-12

But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light. - Ephesians 5:13

For this reason it says, “Awake, sleeper, And arise from the dead, And Christ will shine on you.” - Ephesians 5:14

The saved are special and walk differently: They walk in unity They walk in holiness New way of life Filled with good things No impurity in Word/Action

Holy Living creates light where there is darkness.
