E.g. http://www.solutionwatch.com/368/fifty-ways-to-take-notes/ TASKS Look at the areas of study outlined in the module and the main areas identified as significant movements, period or genre that changed performance and chose a topic you are interested in. This could be related to drama, dance, music or film- remember it must be from the period 1950 -2000. Research the topic from a wide range of sources – books, internet, DVD’s, journals, etc Make notes and ensure you organise these into a useful structure – use your study skills – there are many web sites that give helpful hints on taking useful notes. E.g. http://www.solutionwatch.com/368/fifty-ways-to-take-notes/ Create a list of your ideas /thoughts –or make a diagram – flow chart Read through all your thoughts ideas and decide what is the most relevant to the essay question Create an outline plan of the structure of your essay

Suggested structure The following is a very good web site looking at the ten key points to writing an essay http://www1.aucegypt.edu/academic/writers/  Introduction – Give an overview of what you are going to be analysing and discussing in relation to the wider socio –economic, political and cultural context Main section – Plan what will be the content of each of your main paragraphs (Sometimes it’s helpful when writing a draft to create headings for the paragraphs which you can delete later) Conclusion – Your summing up of your ideas – key points. NB Remember this is an analytical essay don’t just describe historical events or practice, ensure you analyse and discuss events or movements explaining the connections between the performing arts and the socio-economic, political and cultural contexts and how these affected changes or new developments in your chosen performance topic. Back up your own ideas with reference to the ideas/quotes you have read. Credit all your sources in the correct academic form – making sure all quotes are cited and at the end you list of all your sources. ( remember web site Neil’s Toolbox is helpful)
