Greek Art

Greece Excelled in many different areas Political ideals serve as a model for contemporary democracy Poetry and drama survived as living classics Architecture and sculpture had an enormous influence in Rome and Europe. Art and architecture were matters of public policy

Acropolis-The highest point of a Greek city where temples and government buildings were located.

Parthenon Temple built to honor the goddess Athena, the goddess of wisdom. A giant statue of the goddess was placed inside the temple. Doric temple made of a special marble that changes color with the time of day .

Parthenon- 447-432

Greek Prizes Greek vases used as prizes for the Olympic games. Orange because of the clay. Painted with black figures representing the race for which the prize was won.

Greek Sculptures Contraposto- Italian for “weight shift” sculptural technique where the body is positioned in a “s” curve. The weight of the legs are balanced causing the figure to look more relaxed. Canon- a set of guidelines developed by the Greeks to help sculptors sculpt the body accurately.

Laocoon Group-

Amphora Set in a gymnasium From childhood exercise was as much as Greek culture as learning math, music, and philosophy. Males were in constant training for competition, beauty, and protection of their cities. Women were largely confined to a domestic role and their bodies were usually not for public display.

Kore-Greek for girl. Statue of a clothed young girl. Always painted.

Venus de Milo-c.150 B.C.

Krater Not only depicted a funeral but also served as a grave marker itself Death was death to the Greeks, not so optimistic like the Egyptians were.
