Essential Question: How do major organ systems work together in living organisms? Standards: S7L2d. Explain that tissues, organs, and organ systems serve the needs cells have for oxygen, food, and waste removal. S7L2e. Explain the purpose of the major organ systems in the human body (i.e., digestion, respiration, reproduction, circulation, excretion, movement, control and coordination, and for protection from disease). Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should review the essential question and the standards that align to the essential question

Why did Rick and the other survivors fight for the prison Why did Rick and the other survivors fight for the prison? What purpose did it serve for them? Instructional Approach(s): Ask the students to raise their hand if they have seen or know about the TV series “The Walking Dead” Select one student to give a 30 second summary of “The Walking Dead” series (basically for some unknown reason people who die turn into zombies and if you get bitten by a zombie, you turn into a zombie). With a synopsis of the series, all students should be able to discuss the purpose of the prison (to provide shelter and protection from the zombies).

Protection from Disease Your body has many ways to defend itself One of the body’s best defenses is to keep foreign materials from entering the body in the first place. The skin is a physical barrier that keeps pathogens (agents that cause disease) and other foreign materials out of the body. Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide

Sys10: Integumentary System It includes skin, hair, and nails. Functions: The skin guards against infection The skin helps maintain balance (homeostasis). For example, when you are too hot you sweat to cool off. The skin also senses the environment. Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record the important information about the Integumentary System on the Protection from Disease page of their graphic organizer sheet

Protection from Disease (aThe Integumentary (Skin), Respiratory, and Digestive Systems are the first lines of defense against pathogens (agents that cause disease) Sneezing and coughing are ways to defend the body. Also, hair-like fibers found in the nose and lungs help trap particles. Saliva, mucus, stomach acids and other substances help destroy foreign materials Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide. The students do not have to write down information from the slide. The students just need a basic understanding that systems which have other primary functions also provide protection from disease.

When the first lines of defense do not keep pathogens (agents that cause disease) out, the Immune System steps in. Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information from the slide

Sys11: Immune System Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should use the image on the slide to illustrate some of the “pathogens” (agents that cause disease) that can cause problems or illness

Role of the Immune System: Recognize, attack, and destroy foreign cells or substances that may cause disease Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the slide while the students record the important information about the Immune System on the Protection from Disease: Immune System section on their graphic organizer sheet

Organs of the Immune System White Blood Cell T Cell Antibodies B Cell Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the “organs” of the Immune System on the slide and the students should record these organs on their Protection from Disease: Immune System section of their graphic organizer sheet

Viral Attack Comic Instructional Approach(s): Use the Viral Attack Comic to tell the story of the Immune System and its organs. The students do not need to know the specifics necessarily of each Immune System “organ”, but they should have a general idea of the types of cells that are considered “organs” of the Immune System

Immune System Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJEc2GDEfz8 OR Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should select one of the videos to show to reinforce the Immune System https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFk02G6Q9GU Magic School Bus Immune System 16 mins

Sys12: The Lymphatic System The lymphatic system transports pathogen-fighting white blood cells throughout the body. Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record the important information on the Protection from Disease: Lymphatic System section on their graphic organizer sheet.

The Lymphatic System Lymph is a fluid left in the tissues by the circulatory system and it moves through lymph vessels (like veins). Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record the important information about the Lymphatic System on their graphic organizer sheet

The Lymphatic System Lymph travels through lymph nodes which filter out pathogens and store white blood cells. Instructional Approach(s): The teacher should present the information on the slide while the students record the important information about the Lymphatic System on their graphic organizer sheet

3 – 2 – 1 Identify 3 systems of the body that work to protect the body from disease. Identify 2 organs that are used to protect the body from disease. Identify 1 way in which the body naturally works to protect the body. Instructional Approach(s): Each student should complete the summarizer. The teacher should use the summarizer to determine student level of mastery of the body’s protection from disease. The summarizer should also be used to organize differentiated activities if needed.
