A Holistic Advising Approach: Benefits of the Cluster Model Introduction of the presenters during this slide.

University College Established in 1997 as a gateway for incoming students Focus is student retention & success, not conferring degrees Home to First Year Seminars, bridge programs, themed learning communities, multiple peer-mentoring programs 75% of all IUPUI undergraduates begin in University College Provide student focused advising, career exploration, and MANY support services for students during school transition Academic and Career Development is largest unit in UC

Academic & Career Development Academic & Career Development facilitates students’ academic and career success by providing programs and services that engage students in exploring and committing to educational and career goals, developing and implementing meaningful academic plans, transitioning into degree granting schools, and translating learning to the world of work. Delete?

Academic & Career Development: Problems to Solve Provide more integrated academic and career advising Support students in early choice of major and relevant degree planning Facilitate timely transition from UC to degree granting schools Create more focused communication with degree programs

Academic & Career Development: Context Old model lack of Career Consultant utilization misdirected communications Transitioned in 2014 Five minutes.

Five clusters designed for specific majors and specific schools. Decentralized Career Services. Focus is on exploration, not Employment Services Work closely with Office of Student Employment for coaching on job search, resumes, professionalism, etc.

Benefits of Cluster Model Develop closer relationships with specific schools Enhance student satisfaction with major, provide more opportunities for major and career exploration, and better facilitate transition to degree-granting school More reasonable expectations for advisors and career consultants Focused, intentional programming provided by clusters

Enterprise, Policy, and Planning Cluster Successes Increased student outreach Building relationships with partner schools Crossroads workshops Open House Intentional tracking

Does the Cluster Model Work?

Does the Cluster Model Work?

Why does this matter for you? Institutions are evaluated on student outcomes We’re ALL charged with these same goals Student concerns are holistic Think of an issue that isn’t in ‘your area’ Students need broad network of support How can you, in your role, collaborate with colleagues to support students’ academic and career success? THANK YOU! We are charged as student affairs educators to encourage students to persist through their degrees, grow experience, and cultivate their vocational identities. http://www.in.gov/che/files/Indiana_Colleg_Value_Index.pdf
