“An online program to enhance the quality of clinical education”.

Introduction Developed in collaboration with: Lead Advisor Teaching and Assessment for Medical Educators is a program that will enhance the quality of faculty professional development within clinical education. It will help those with teaching responsibilities to become more proficient in tailoring their teaching according to learner needs and diverse educational settings; in developing clinical reasoning skills; in involving patients in the learning process; in designing appropriate assessments; in delivering and receiving feedback; and in addressing potential challenges. Ultimately, this program will help educators ensure that the clinicians of tomorrow are fit to practice. This program encourages participants to review their profession-specific standards and domains. The courses include surveys, polls, interviews with practitioners and experts and audio learning, Interactive activities to help illustrate models such as the one-minute preceptor and SNAPPS models. What is the TAME programme? Two online courses focussing on clinical teaching and research skills and clinical assessment, evaluation and feedback. Developed for doctors, non-doctor clinicians and academics who teach medical students at varying levels. This program encourages participants to review their profession-specific standards and domains Easy-to-follow online learning course, with additional offline study. Interactive videos, surveys and audio learning and interviews and insight from medical professionals.

Contributors Authors: Dr Eva Aagaard - Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean for Educational Strategy, Director of the Center for Professional Excellence and Director of the Academy of Nursing Educators at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr Janet Corral - Director of Evaluation and Research, the Teaching Scholars Program, and Online Learning for the Academy of Nursing Educators at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Fara Bowler - Coordinator of the Clinical Education Center and Simulation Suite for the University of Colorado, College of Nursing.

About the course Structure: Who is it for? Overview and content Course and Times Syllabus Authors/Reviewers Clinical teaching and learning Over 2 hours, 30 minutes Clinical teaching and learning looks at how medical educators should involve patients in the teaching process in order to enhance learning and inspire students. Participants will understand the value of patients in the learning process, how to prepare students and patients for the encounter, and how best to facilitate learning, team teaching and record-keeping. They will be able to give constructive feedback and understand its importance in teaching and learning. Introduction to assessment in clinical practice Thinking critically about assessments Choosing, implementing and communicating assessments Dealing with challenges including those related to professional integrity Providing meaningful feedback, context evaluation and quality improvements. Course features Interactive activities, models and scenarios. Interviews with professionals and students on some of the key components of clinical teaching and learning. Case studies and practical scenarios exploring real-life examples. Practice scenario at the end of the course to help participants to apply new knowledge and skills to a realistic, clinical situation. Interactive activities to help illustrate models such as the one-minute preceptor and SNAPPS models. Interactive polls with real-time results for course-takers to assess their answers against others.

Learning outcomes By completing this program, participants will be better equipped to: Identify the needs of each learner and how you can best facilitate their learning. Recognize how to prepare and engage patients in learning experiences. Design a planned teaching session around your aims, the learners, your context, available resources and assessment. Define self-directed learning and critically appraise the benefits to the learner. Apply strategies to deal with different needs and potentially challenging situations. Examine the competency-based movement of assessment, including entrustable professional activities and milestones Explore the different kinds of rubrics and choose the ones best suited to your assessment needs Apply the basic concepts of assessment to grading in clinical settings, and discuss the challenges that might occur Provide more effective and supportive feedback.
