Behave Responsibly No Horseplay Arrive prepared Be conscientious of your surroundings (equipment and partners)

No unauthorized experiments Do not use any equipment or instruments without proper instruction. Follow all instructions given by the instructor including special direction for all individual experiments.

Know the location of all safety equipment and how to use it: Fire pull station, fire blanket, fire extinguisher emergency shower, emergency eye wash. Report accidents to your teacher

Wear protective equipment safety goggles, gloves, lab coat to protect against burns and/or chemical spills. Proper eye protection is to be worn when the potential for eye injury exists: spilling or splashing or hot or hazardous chemicals. All spills must be cleaned up appropriately. Inform the instructor of contact lenses.

Dress appropriately: tie back loose hair No open toe shoes Secure loose clothing or jewellery

Glassware Safety: Never use chipped, cracked or broken or glassware. Never pick up broken glass with your bare hands. Sweep broken glass in the “broken glass” container. Never force glass tubing into a cork or stopper.

Electrical Safety: Do not use electrical cords that are frayed. Always pull on the plug, not the cord. Why? Weak spot on the cord make break.

Chemical safety Consider every chemical dangerous Avoid inhaling fumes, tasting, touching, smelling any chemical unless specifically told to do so by the instructor. Waft if you need to detect an odor.

Chemical Safety If chemical splashes on skin or clothing, rinse immediately with large quantities of water. When mixing water and acid, always pour acid into the water. Acid  Water.

Fire Safety: Never leave a Bunsen burner unattended. Turn off gas valves when not in use. When heating, point open glassware away from yourself and partner. Use tongs. Do not heat closed containers.

Sharps Safety: Always cut away from you Place used sharps in correct receptacle.

Food Safety Do not eat, drink, smoke, chew gum or apply makeup in the lab. Do not use any lab containers for food or drink.

Clean Up When Finished: Return all materials to their proper places. Dispose of wastes properly. Wipe bench. Wash your hands with soap and water after working in the lab.

Labels on Hazardous Products HHPS and WHMIS Symbols

Household Hazardous Product Symbols (HHPS) Many products used in our homes may be dangerous if used incorrectly. For this reason, household products are marked with symbols that allow us to recognize and interpret potential hazards

Each symbol has two components: Its shape tells you how hazardous a product is:

Within each shape are symbols that tell you what kind of hazard the product is:

Identify the meaning of the following symbols:

WHMIS SYMBOLS The Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) has produced symbols for hazardous products found in the workplace. WHMIS symbols are similar to HHPS symbols, but are always in a circle WHMIS symbols identify a wider range of hazards than HHPS symbols

WHMIS LABELS WHMIS labels are affixed or attached to the containers of controlled products, and provide information that: Alerts the user to the hazards of the product States what precautions to take when handling the product. Refers the user to a material safety data sheet (MSDS) for more detailed information about the product.
