What To Do… Open your binder to the inquiry and engineering table of contents. Have a pencil ready We are getting some papers back today!

Before we Begin… Quiz tomorrow! (will be over tools, scientific method, graphs, bias, experiments, models…) We need egg cartons!!!! Not the cardboard kind please.

What To Do… Open your manuals to page 15. Answer the following question in the Think About It… What is the difference between qualitative data and quantitative data?

Controlled Experiments Standards: Inq.1 - Design a simple experimental procedure with an identified control and appropriate variables. Inq.2 - Select tools and procedures needed to conduct a moderately complex experiment.

After the video clip, identify these questions on a scratch sheet of paper… 1)what is being measured? 2) what are the variables?

Video Response: 1) What is being measured? 2) What are the variables? The ability of the cans of soda to float or sink. Independent: Amount of sugar in the soda Dependent: Ability of the can to float or sink Controls: Size of can, amount of soda in the can, the water container, the type of water, the person putting the cans into the water

Variables Examples of variables: -Temperature -Light A factor that CAN CHANGE. Some variables will cause other factors to change also. Examples of variables: -Temperature -Light - Open vs. Closed container -Location -Time -Elevation -Pressure

A Quantitative Variable is one that is measured using numbers Examples: temperature is measured in degrees, length can be measured in centimeters.

Qualitative A Qualitative variable is one that is measured by its qualities. Examples: bright, dull, clear, rough, smooth, plain

What do you Think? 1. Qualitative? a. Measures using numbers b. Measures by length c. Measures by it’s qualities 2. Quantitative? a. Measures using numbers b. Measures by length c. Measures by it’s qualities

Controls The CONTROLS in an experiment are all the factors that the experimenter attempts to keep constant or the same in all groups Keeping a constant will ensure that all trials of an investigation were equally impacted by the variable; therefore, allowing one to see the impact of an independent variable on the dependent variable.

Control Group In a scientific experiment, the control group is the standard of comparison to see if the independent variable has any effect.

Control Group The control group may be a “no treatment” or an “experimenter selected” group The control group is exposed to the same conditions as the experimental group, EXCEPT for the variable being tested. In a controlled experiment only ONE variable is allowed to change at a time. All experiments should have a control group

What do you Think? 1. The control group serves as…? The independent variable The standard for comparison The dependent variable 2. The control(s) is/are always? Changed Measured Constant

Experimental Group The group that will receive the independent variable stimulus The group that is being tested

Independent Variables vs. Independent variable: the variable that you change or that you WANT to test. Dependent variable: The variable that changes BECAUSE of the independent variable In other words, the independent variable is the cause and the dependent variable is the effect.

What do you Think? 1. This is the group being tested? a. Music group b. Control group c. Experimental group 2. The independent variable is the one that…? Is changed Is measured Is free to do what it wants

Y Graphing Variables X dependent independent The Independent variable is always graphed on the X axis. The dependent variable is always graphed on the Y axis. Y dependent X independent

QUESTION INDEPENDENT VARIABLE (What I change) DEPENDENT VARIABLE (What I observe) CONTROLLED VARIABLE (Kept the same) How much water flows through a faucet at different openings? Water faucet opening (closed, half open, fully open) Amount of water flowing measured in liters per minute The Faucet Water pressure, or how much the water is "pushing" Does heating a cup of water allow it to dissolve more sugar? Temperature of the water measured in degrees Amount of sugar that dissolves completely measured in grams Stirring Type of sugar

DO! Find the independent, dependent, and controls from the given experiment. Students want to determine which type of plant will best survive in a hot, dry environment. They place 4 different types of plants in identical pots. They put all 4 plants by the same large window. They give each plant the same amount of water every day.   Independent variable: __________________________________ Dependent variable: __________________________________ Controls: _______________________________________________________ Type of plant Plant growth Amount and type of water, amount and type of soil, location, window, sunlight exposure, pot
