Their ships are powered by the wind and most of the time, oars. Viking Ships The Vikings built long boats to travel to other lands and to attack villages. How They Moved Their ships are powered by the wind and most of the time, oars. The Viking ship had a big square sail and a few had smaller sails. The Vikings ranged from Scandinavia to Iceland, Greenland and even Africa! What They Look Like A usual Viking Ship had a Dragon, Spirit, God or some other creature to scare away the enemies. They were usually 30 meters long and had about 32 oars. The average speed of a Long boat is 32 kms. The Ship usually had a name such as the long serpent or the Snake of the Sea. Their Decks The warship had a deck across the whole of the ship. Oar holes were under the deck for when they needed oars. Some warriors put shields through the oar holes when they were under attack! When They Sailed They first set sail in 600-700 Ad. The idea came from a row boat then the Vikings adapted. Types Of Boats The Vikings invented 11 different types of ships. They had the Knorr, a trade ship. The Gokstad, the largest known Viking Boat. And the other main ship was the Oseburg, A very big sailor. But there is still lots of ships! The Vikings were very intelligent people to design such great ships!
