Build Background- 10 minutes Reading goal: Identifying problem and solution: Imagine a young boy, a runner who had a big race coming up, but hadn’t trained enough. That would be problem, wouldn’t it? What are some ways he could solve this problem? Use think-pair-share to think of some ways to solve this problem. Many stories have a problem that a character faces. The characters in these stories have to try and come up with a solution to their problem

Problem and Solution A Day at the Pool Charlie and his friends decided to hang out all day at the community pool. It was a gorgeous day, so it seemed like a good idea. Once the kids got there, some of Charlie’s friends decided to jump of the highest diving board. But Charlie was afraid of heights. He didn’t know what to do. He didn’t want to seem scared in front of his friends, but he was. Charlie thought for a minute. Then he had an idea. He decided he would pretend he was Duke Dodger, his favorite action hero. Duke wasn’t afraid of anything. Charlie, pretending to be Duke, climbed up the ladder and leaped into the air.
