Model for Improvement What are we trying to accomplish? Act Plan Study How will we know that a change is an improvement? What changes can we make that will result in an improvement? The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle is shorthand for testing a change. You may have heard of variations of this cycle – such as the Shewhart Cycle, Deming Cycle, and PDSA Cycle The cycle promotes a trial and learning approach to improvement efforts with encouragement to test an idea rather than do an extensive analysis— by planning it, trying it, observing the results, and acting on what is learned. This is the scientific method, used for action-oriented learning. The cycle is used for learning, to develop changes, test, and implement changes Linking small tests of change helps overcome an organization's natural resistance to change and ensure buy-in.
