Social Issues & American Response Post War America Social Issues & American Response

Today in U.S. History B I Can…analyze the response to the major social issues that arose after World War One.

War’s End World War One ends in 1918 Millions of Americans return home with satisfaction  World peace has been established However, America soon faces economic, political, and social turmoil that is not settled until the Roaring 20s begin.. “I felt that when peace came we’d all by so joyful that nothing would weigh upon us again. I find, however, the problems of reconstruction loom so large that we are as much occupied with them as we have been with the problems of war.”

100 Percent Americanism World War I had lead to great feelings of patriotism….Go America! This will have lingering effects after War…if you love your country and have great pride, how would you feel about other countries? During war, hatred for the “hun” (or Germans) was great, once war is over this turns to another group in Europe…. 100 Percent Americanism- celebrated all things American, while it attacked all foreign ideas.. Impact?

Rise of Bolsheviks Russia left WWI because of an internal revolution…their monarchy was overthrown & after a short civil war, the Bolsheviks took over power. Bolsheviks- a communist group (Red Army) led by Vladimir Lenin What is communism? How does it differ from the American economic system? Predict: How will Americans respond to “Reds” or communists in their country? Why?

American response Communism and its direct threat to capitalism scared many Americans Hatred for the Huns turns to hatred for the “Reds” A Red Scare began in the United States- a widespread fear of communism and other radical ideas Palmer Raids- round up of suspected radicals; they arrested and deported thousands of those ‘suspected’.

Labor Issues After the War

Impact on Labor Effects on Labor Causes of Labor Unrest Use page 273-274 to complete chart Effects on Labor Causes of Labor Unrest Labor Unrest

Impact on Labor Effects on Labor Causes of Labor Unrest Unions lost members Lost power in national politics Reputations of labor and unions declined Causes of Labor Unrest Lower demand for factory goods hurt industry More workers than jobs Organized labor attached to communism Labor Unrest

Immigration Predict: How is the Red Scare and Labor Unrest going to impact how Americans feel about immigration? Competition for scarce jobs and the fear of foreigners triggered backlash against immigration. Nativists targeted “new” immigrants who they thought couldn’t be Americanized

Response to Immigration Labor leaders, union members, and nativists pushed for restrictions on immigration 1921- law established a quota (fixed #) of immigrations 1924- National Origins Act – set quotas for each country at 2% Ku Klux Klan began targeting immigrants… “native white, protestant supremacy”

Sacco and Vanzetti Trial Welcome to Discovery Education Player Italian immigrants- Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti arrested for armed robbery and murder Known anarchists- those that sought the destruction of government Put on trial, convicted, and executed (for murder and robbery) Controversy arose over whether they were really on trial for crimes or for their political beliefs “My conviction is that I have suffered for things I am guilty of. I am suffering because I am a radical, and indeed I am a radical; I have suffered because I was an Italian, and indeed I am an Italian.”

How did Americans respond to the major social issues that arose after World War One’s End? Summarize
