Accelerator R&D for Future Neutrino Projects International context Current activities in the UK Plans for the future Conclusions

International context Focus here on post-T2K, NOνA facilities Aims driven by CERN SG: “…..studies of the scientific case for future neutrino facilities and the R&D into associated technologies are required to be in a position to define the optimal neutrino programme based on the information available in around 2012; Council will play an active role in promoting a coordinated European participation in a global neutrino programme” Within Europe, being done by EUROnu: - FP7 Design Study - 15 partners, 6 from UK - coordinated by STFC - 13.5M€ total budget - runs 1st September 08 to 31st August 12 - part of CERN strategy - see http://www.euronu.org

EUROnu Neutrino Factory CERN to Frejus SB Higher Q isotope Beta Beam + detectors & physics Main objective: “cost” & performance comparison for SG

IDS-NF International activities........ NF Collaboration

Overall conceptual design UK Activities Fully integrated with IDS-NF and EUROnu Generic nature of activities exploited for funding Overall conceptual design FETS Targets EMMA MICE RF

Front End Test Stand Very important section of all high power (>1MW) drivers Plus associated diagnostic devices Being built by collaboration of: Imperial College STFC Warwick UBC, Spain Important for: Neutrino Factory ISIS upgrades other high power projects SLHC

Front End Test Stand

MICE Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment Crucial engineering demo of cooling for NF and Muon Collider Under construction in R5.2 at RAL International collaboration: 140 people, 31 institutes, 8 countries Cooling cells Tracking detectors PID

MICE - trackers – tested with cosmics Status – beam & detectors: - beamline working - PID detectors working - muons seen - target issues being dealt with - hall far advanced - trackers – tested with cosmics Status – cooling cells – only 1 funded - magnets: under construction - RF: under construction - LH2 absorbers: 1 built First demo of cooling: 2010/11

EMMA Model of muon FFAG accelerator(s) in NF – v. imp. R&D project Proof-of-principle non-scaling FFAG in BASROC/CONFORM: - proton & light ion cancer therapy - ADSR - muon production for slow muons - etc Under construction at Daresbury, use ALICE as injector Funded (mainly) by EPSRC - via BT fund Well advanced First beam ~December 09 Parameters: - electrons, 10-20 MeV - 42 cells, 40cm long - 16.5m circumference - 1.3GHz RF
