‘The Wood-Pile’ – Robert Frost Lesson Objective/s To develop an understanding of the destination of ‘The Wood-Pile’ To be able to discuss Frost’s literal and figurative ideas. Outcomes: To have identified and commented on any potential symbols and metaphor Frost uses. Starter activity: Lines from ‘The Road Not Taken’ and ‘Out, Out’. Take each set of lines and discuss how they add meaning to the respective poems. The buzz saw snarled and rattled in the yard And made dust and dropped stove-length sticks of wood, Sweet-scented stuff when the breeze drew across it. To please the boy by giving him the half hour That a boy counts so much when saved from work. And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Since he was old enough to know, big boy Doing a man's work, though a child at heart - He saw all was spoiled. On this day in 1894 twenty-year-old Robert Frost departed for the Dismal Swamp on the Virginia-North Carolina border, with Dark Thoughts. He was poor, jobless, unpublished, expelled from Dartmouth College and, pretty much for all of the above reasons, recently spurned by his high school sweetheart and chosen mate, Elinor White. Frost had just returned from a visiting White at Lawrence College, made unannounced but bearing gifts: the two homemade copies of his first, five-poem book of poetry, Twilight. White barely opened her door far enough to receive her copy; Frost tore his to pieces as he walked away. He packed a small bag for an undisclosed destination; he left Boston by train and New York by steamer; he began an unclear ten-mile walk into a soggy heart of darkness.

‘The Wood-Pile’ I have split the poem into three sections. You have a section each. Section – 1 – Lines 0-9 Section – 2 – Lines 10-22 Section – 3 – Lines 23-40 You must: *Make a literal reading *Explore any figurative imagery/symbols *Attach a theme from the four we studied.

What has been established here? Section 1 Lines 0-9 What has been established here? Out walking in the frozen swamp one grey day I paused and said, “I will turn back from here. No, I will go on farther—and we shall see.” The hard snow held me, save where now and then One foot went down. The view was all in lines Straight up and down of tall slim trees Too much alike to mark or name a place by So as to say for certain I was here Or somewhere else: I was just far from home.

Section 2 – Lines 10-22 A small bird flew before me. He was careful To put a tree between us when he lighted, And say no word to tell me who he was Who was so foolish as to think what he thought. He thought that I was after him for a feather— The white one in his tail; like one who takes Everything said as personal to himself. One flight out sideways would have undeceived him. And then there was a pile of wood for which I forgot him and let his little fear Carry him off the way I might have gone, Without so much as wishing him good-night. How is the bird personified here? What is the attitude of the poet towards the bird? There seems a tinge of irony here. Where is it? It’s been suggested that the bird ‘is significant in terms of being insignificant’. What are your thoughts on this?

Section 3 Lines 23-40 He went behind it to make his last stand. It was a cord of maple, cut and split And piled—and measured, four by four by eight. And not another like it could I see. No runner tracks in this year’s snow looped near it. And it was older sure than this year’s cutting, Or even last year’s or the year’s before. The wood was grey and the bark warping off it And the pile somewhat sunken. Clematis Had wound strings round and round it like a bundle. What held it though on one side was a tree Still growing, and on one a stake and prop, These latter about to fall. I thought that only Someone who lived in turning to fresh tasks Could so forget his handiwork on which He spent himself, the labour of his axe, And leave it there far from a useful fireplace To warm the frozen swamp as best it could With the slow smokeless burning of decay. Section 3 Lines 23-40 What is significant about the wood-pile’s first description? How does Frost present the age of the wood-pile? Why might the wood-pile have been left where it was? What contrast is made between mankind and nature here? The word ‘purpose’ seems to resonate in the final two lines of the poem? Why?
