Rocco’s Keys to Reading Comprehension

Metacognition These are the strategies I use… This one is my favorite Summarize I talk out loud about the important points in each chapter--related to the problem

Strategy #2 Making Connections You have to connect the dots from book one to the next books. You can’t skim over each chapter—you have to read closely. If you don’t, at the end, it won’t make sense because if you miss a key detail, you will have trouble in the coming chapters.

Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters Back to book one Nonmortals and cannon balls All refitted with Celestial bronze cannon balls Thinking by Rocco B. Dark rooms Dead sailors Ship tour Gunnery deck pilothouse Clarisses’ favorite cannons Rifled guns Boilers, engine Coal bunker port Brooke Dahlgren aft starboard fore It might explode

Strategy #3 Finding the Story Elements This helps me figure out the most important parts of the story. This helps me to understand the story better and to remember the key details. I fill out an organizer in my head.

Rising Action

Strategy #4 Visualize I make a picture of chapters and what’s happening—I make a movie. Kampe

Strategy # 5 Not too often… I ask myself a question when something doesn’t make sense. Then… I read the part in the book again. I look back. I think about what happened previously in the chapters or in the other books. (Monitoring comprehension; using fix-up strategies)

Percy Jackson and Rocco… This is what this series has helped me with… Becoming a better reader Building my reading endurance Decoding and fluency Making inferences and understanding complex stories Understanding Greek mythology

Finally… I wrote about the theme of The Titan’s Curse See my handout

“Reading Is Not Just Words On a Paper” Rocco B., 2015 I like that Percy is dyslexic. I love that this book is interesting, and it intrigued me from the start. I love to make connections from one book to another. Rick Riordan doesn’t forget about the previous books. He always tries to connect details to the next book.

These books have made me a confident reader.
