A reading from the first letter of St John The devil was a sinner from the beginning. It was to undo all that the devil has done that the Son of God appeared. - 1 John 3:8

Angels have intellect and will which means Reflection Angels have intellect and will which means they can choose to follow God or not. At one point in time a certain group of angels willingly chose to turn away and reject God and His reign. The leader of this group of fallen angels is the devil. He and all the fallen angels became evil by their own doing by making the radical choice to turn completely from God.

We should not be afraid of the devil, but we also cannot pretend like he doesn’t exist. He may try to lead us astray, so it is important to be on guard by praying, avoiding sin, going to the sacraments, and using our freewill to do good things. But we have to always remember that God is far greater than the devil and that Jesus Christ has already defeated him by His Death and Resurrection.

We pray together this famous prayer to St. Michael for protection from the devil St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our defence against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray, and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly hosts, by the power of God, thrust into hell Satan, and all the evil spirits, who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
