Letters and Sounds “All children benefit hugely by the exposure of books from an early age. Right from the start, lots of opportunities should be provided for children to engage with books, that fire their imagination and interest. Enjoying and sharing books leads to children seeing them as a source of pleasure and interest and motivates them to value reading.” Taken from Letters and Sounds

Reading In the Foundation Stage we are always encouraging our children to develop a love of books. Within the Foundation Stage reading is a vital part of our daily activities. Within the week the children have a Shared read Guided read Independent read Library books Story time

Reading Shared Read We sit together as a class to share a book, it may be a big book, small book, fictional book or a non fiction book. We discuss elements of the book, for example, What a title is? What does it mean? Where do we find it? What does it tell us? Who the author is What does an author do? Where do we look for the author?

Reading Shared Read Who are the characters and what they like? Where is the book set, depending on non fiction and fiction texts? Predicting what will happen next, What is happening in the pictures, How will it end? Guided Read Small group – 6 children per group Quiet environment Opportunity to teach reading

Reading Guided Read To teach strategies of reading Help children see the purpose of reading To model how to use a book Modelling language Uninterrupted Ability groups Clearing learning intentions

Reading Independent Read Taking home a book that the child can read to their family – this could be a little brother or sister, a parent, a grand parent – anyone the child would like to read to. Listen to every child read twice a week Check that they are using all the strategies that they have been taught in their Guided Reading sessions

Reading Library books Once a week every child will get together with a member of the FS Team and choose a library book. The children will discuss with the adult what interest them about the book, what do they like about it, what do they think it is about Look at the book at home with your child, read the story every day so the children become familiar with the story, discuss pictures and ask questions. Ask the children to tell you the story using the pictures as visual clues

Reading Story Time A time where we can sit together as a class and enjoy a book, it can be anything, a fictional text, non-fiction text, magazine, a musical story. We made read the same book a number of times and make sure that every book we read is displayed in the reading area so the children can revisit the book independently.

Reading at home Library Book This is another opportunity to share a book with your child and have fun. Reading Book Listen to your child read every night. If they have the same book for a few nights, do not worry. Consolidation of the text is necessary to allow them the opportunity to understand what is happening in the story. Reading for pleasure It is important that you read as many books with your children as possible and really try and instill a love of reading in them. It’s important that children see you reading
