5. Why is reading so important?
Evidence suggests that children who read for enjoyment every day not only perform better in reading tests than those who don’t, but also develop a broader vocabulary, increased general knowledge and a better understanding of other cultures.
It develops fundamental speaking and listening skills that are vital for children's communication so they can live successful lives in society.
It supports development of word recognition and sentence structure which are key skills for children developing their ability write.
Exposes them to a rich, broad vocabulary.
Helps children develop an imagination, allowing them to explore new places and cultures, deepening their understanding of the world around them.

6. What we do at BJS to promote reading.

7. Book Corners We have invested lots of money in our Book Corners!
Each class has a wide selection of high quality texts to support reading and learning.
Every child has the opportunity to select books from their class reading corner to take home or read in school.

8. School Library We now have a whole school library, run by Mrs Kent.
Every child has the opportunity to visit the library, once a week, at lunchtimes.

12. What are we doing in school?
Power of reading
Literacy unit of work based around a high quality book aimed at developing a love for reading.
Our texts link to our IPC work.
Aim to develop resilience in reading for all children.

13. What are we doing in school?
Phonics/ Support for Spelling
1:1 or small group phonics session where children learn to blend sounds into words and learn tricky words as a sight vocabulary
Children have support for spelling/ reading taught 3x per week which teaches rules, patterns and exceptions to words.

14. We also have World Book Day once a year to promote reading!

Children read at least 3x per week (although we encourage every night!)
Parents to sign reading records every time your child reads at home
Children to record a comment about the book they have read (E.g. What was your favourite part and why? Interesting new words)

Encourage the understanding and use of new vocabulary
Share songs, rhymes and read poems, enjoying the rhyme and rhythm of words.
