Climate Climate: is the average weather conditions in an area over a long period of time it is measured by examining the weather conditions of a region such as the temperature, Air pressure, precipitation, humidity, sunshine, winds, and cloudiness.

Climate The Climate of a region is also affected by its latitude, altitude, terrain, and its surrounding bodies of water. Global warming is increasing the frequency and intensity of some types of extreme weather. Examples:heavy rainfall and flooding ,stronger hurricanes, and more severe droughts.

Jet Streams Jet streams: are fast flowing narrow air currents that are found in the atmosphere. This affects temperatures and precipitation.

Jet Stream How does it affect the climate The polar and the subtropical jet streams affect the climate. They transport weather that affects us. .

Structure of the Atmosphere Troposphere: Where weather occurs, this is the only part of the atmosphere where humans can live.

Structure of the Atmosphere Stratosphere: Layer above the troposphere. This layer of the atmosphere contains the ozone layer. The ozone layer protects us from the harmful UV light from the sun.

Structure of the Atmosphere Mesosphere: Above the Stratosphere layer. Its 50-80 km.The Mesosphere is the coldest region, the temperature can drop to below 100 degrees celsius. This layer protects the earth from meteoroids.

Structure of the Atmosphere Thermosphere: The thinnest layer and Is above the mesosphere and is 90-km and up in altitude. This is the hottest layer of the atmosphere the temperature can go up to 2000 degrees celsius. Also known as the “heat layer”.this layer contains the ionosphere and exosphere.

Structure of the Atmosphere Ionosphere: The lower part of the thermosphere. Has gas particles which absorb ultraviolet and x-ray radiation these soon become electrically charged ions. This layer help radio communication by reflecting radio waves off ions and into earth but solar flares can get in the way of this.

Structure of the Atmosphere Exosphere: The upper part of the thermosphere where the air is very thin. The exosphere is where satellites orbit the earth.

Coriolis Effect Coriolis Effect: Is an effect where a moving object moving in a rotating movement experiences a force (coriolis effect), acts perpendicular to the direction of motion and to the axis of motion.

Coriolis Effect How does it affect the earth: The Coriolis Effect causes storms in the southern hemisphere to swirl clockwise and causes storms in the north hemisphere to swirl counterclockwise. Examples: Storms, winds, toilets
