The Moon Objective: To learn the phases of the moon and how eclipses occur.

Research: Moon: Rocky sphere in orbit about 240,000 miles away. Light seen on the moon: reflected sunlight. Phases of the moon: changes in the amount of sunlight as the moon revolves around the Earth.

Research continued… Waxing: when the reflected light from the moon is increasing. Appears to grow. Waning: when the reflected light from the moon is decreasing. Appears to shrink. Crescent: less than half the moon is lit. Gibbous: more than half the moon is lit.

Lunar Eclipse: the Moon passes through the shadow of the Earth.

Solar Eclipse: the Earth passes through the shadow of the Moon.

Phases of the Moon Draw the phases as seen from the Earth. Correctly label each phase using the following terms: Full moon, new moon, first quarter, third quarter, waxing crescent, waning crescent, waxing gibbous, waning gibbous.
