Resume Review

Plan for today: Who needs a resume & why What goes on it? Formatting “Rules” Sample Questions & next steps

Who/Why? Everyone applying to a job; a board, international, private school or other For you to demonstrate your skills, knowledge, passion, expertise in relation to teaching, and space permitting, additional skills experience

What? Differs depending on region in: Always: Formatting Content Name, contact information, education, practicum/teaching experience This is debatable, in some countries, Asia for example, you may be required to provide information that you would not be legally asked to in Ontario. For example, sending a picture, or providing age or marital status. If you’re reaching out to other “markets” research what is typical in that area. Content is for the most part universal, but for some places, you may not be required to add your references, more on that in a bit. Or you may be asked to provide all awards etc. The content will also be different if you’re providing a Curriculum Vitae (CV) which is more academic in nature. We will not discuss CVs today, due to time You will always provide the following

What Else? Skills Additional Experience Additional training/PD Language Tech Additional Experience Related Less Related Beyond providing your Name, contact information, education, practicum/teaching experience, you may wish to provide any other skills you’re bringing to the table – additional languages, computer abilities, if you’ve taken or are taking AQs or other relevant (to the job) professional development

Formatting Key Info on Top Where to put Education? Name Contact Details Address? Where to put Education? Depends on Job Description – likely top Keep related things together Reverse Chronological (newest on top) Does it look nice? Is it all there? Can someone read it easily? You’re good.

RULES We don’t talk about Resume Club Everyone has their own; the document is YOURS BUT Must be clear, Contextual True/Accurate Must have what the recruiter/employer wants 2 pages

Samples Two slightly different styles Kept different to show they don’t need to look the same (but info is pretty much the same) Here are two samples of resumes. I deliberately kept them different to show you that the resumes don’t always have to look the same and they can both be “correct”

Sarah PROS CONS Clear Action statements Provides details about experiences Room for more: Languages Tech Some info could be expanded on Ex. 2015 Fall role (last point) Anything you’d add?

Megan PROS CONS Narrative (to some degree) Action oriented Teasing out various skills (parental involvement, conflict mgmt, tech, awarded) Crowded? First line of Teaching Exp. Could more be added to experience? Underlined notes are: Might change depending on the board you apply to Anything you’d add?

Questions/Next Steps What else? What did I miss? OSSC Appointments – do not have to meet with ME! If you have other questions: megan.whitehead@utoronto.ca
