Bellwork 9/26 Complete the following on the back of your Tissue notes from yesterday’s class without your book or notes: What is a group of cells with the same function called? Copy the chart and Identify the overall function of the following tissues types: Tissue type Functions Epithelial Control Connective B. Covering Muscle C. Movement Nervous D. Support

Announcements Word Parts #3 Quiz Tomorrow Epithelial, Muscle and Nervous Tissue Quiz on Th/F Cancer Flyer is now Late

Agenda 9/26 Learning Goal: Essential Question: What are the structure, function and location of epithelial tissues? Discuss project Review Epithelial Tissues Practice Tissues Start Project HW: Reading Notes on Muscle and Nervous Tissue Learning Goal: Identify and classify epithelial tissues based on their structure, function and location

Covering body surfaces Covering and lining internal organs Epithelial Tissue Location Covering body surfaces Covering and lining internal organs Makes up glands This picture will help you with your homework.

Epithelial Tissue Distinguishing Characteristics Tightly packed cells Lack of blood vessels Free surface Basement membrane Readily divide

How to identify epithelial tissue One side is always exposed. This is called the FREE SURFACE. The non-free surface is attached to underlying connective tissue called the BASEMENT MEMBRANE. The cells are tightly packed together so they have very little MATRIX. (Matrix is the material between each cell.) Very few blood vessels are found in epithelial tissue.

Knowledge check Is it epithelial? No YES

Identify the basement membrane Identify the free surface

How to classify epithelial tissue *Note- there is only one layer between the basement membrane and free surface By the number of layers a. Simple= 1 layer Free surface Basement membrane Free surface

1b. Stratified = more than 1 layers Where is the basement membrane? Where is the free surface? Is there more than 1 layer in between? Free surface Basement membrane

1c. Pseudostratified = appears layered because nuclei are on different levels, not truly layered There is only one layer between the basement membrane and free surface but the cells are so tightly packed the nuclei overlap. Free surface Basement membrane

How to classify epithelial tissue 2. By the shape Squamous Cuboidal Columnar Transitional

Knowledge check What shape is it? Squamous Columnar Cuboidal This is stratified squamous

How to identify epithelial tissue 3. If they have cilia or not

How to identify epithelial tissue 4. If they are keratinized or not. Keratinized Cells are dead at surface, noted by lack of nuclei Cells are living, Note the nucleus in every cell

Use the key to identify epithelial tissue Continue until you come to a dead end.
