The SLR (Single Lens Reflex) Camera

The 3 building blocks of the Photographic Image Light Time Subject

As a Photographer…. Every choice- which camera, which film, how the image is composed, when the shutter is tripped, the f-stop and shutter speed used, how the film is developed and printed- has an impact on the final photograph.

The 3 main camera formats: 35mm SLR Large Format Medium Format

For our study of Photo: We will be using the 35mm SLR’s: Canon Rebel K2 (Film Camera) Canon EOS Digital Rebel Xt (Digital)

SLR “Single Lens Reflex” This means that you actually look through the lens that takes the picture. Has interchangeable lenses Great for sports, wildlife, and close-up photography. Generally the most versatile of cameras.

Lenses Have the biggest single effect on photos. Determine how much of a scene is included in the picture. Determine how sharp the image is. Determine how the color looks. The most defining feature of a lens is its focal length.

Shutter Controls the amount of time the light is allowed to hit the film or imaging chip. Shorter Amount of Time Longer Amount of Time 1/8000 1/4000 1/2000 1/1000 1/500 1/250 1/125 1/60 1/30

Viewfinder The feature on the camera that one looks through to determine what to take a photo of.

Film Types: Speeds Negative Film (we use this); B&W or Color Transparency Film (slide films); B&W or Color Speeds Indicated by the ISO (International Standards Organization Slow, Medium, and Fast: SLOW: 25-50 ISO MEDIUM: 100- 200 ISO FAST: 400- 3200 ISO

Compact Flash Card A type of data storage device used in portable electronic devices. For storage, CompactFlash typically uses flash memory Small: 512 MB Medium 1GB to 4 GB Large 4GB- 64 GB

AF Points: Used to choose what of your photo will be in focus.

To take a photo: 1. Turn Power On 2. Choose Mode on Mode Dial 3. Steady Camera 4. Check AF points 5. Press Shutter Half way to Focus 6. Press shutter completely to take photo.
