Domain Name System (DNS) Naming system built on a distributed database address (A) records mail exchanger (MX) records name server (NS) records Translates hostnames into IP addresses “Phone book” www.example.com --> 192.0.32.10 (IPv4)

ICANN Manages IP address spaces Top Level Domains (TLDs) Com, gov, edu, etc.

IANA (Internet Assigned Numbers Authority) Operated by ICANN delegates allocations of IP address blocks to Regional Internet Registries (RIRs). Delegates administrative responsibility of “top- level domains”
