HOSA BUILDS OUR WORKFORCE

Judge Check-in… Please check in at the HOSA Judges Headquarters (Gallery Room) to pick up your event packets We ask that you arrive 20-30 minutes BEFORE your event begins. You may need to pick up event supplies to bring to your event room Coffee, water and snacks are available for judges in the Gallery Room Dress code for Judges is business casual, business dress, or scrubs/uniform. We try to model professional behavior for these high school students We have assigned a Teacher/advisor as the room host to help get students in and out of event in a timely manner and assist you with anything you need

Teamwork and Leadership events All Teamwork and Leadership Events are held Monday from 3p-6p EXCEPT HOSA BOWL; HOSA BOWL will be held from 1p to 2:30p You have received a brief description of your event via email that explains which room your event will be held and other judges/personnel in your event Once you enter your event room and the students are assembled, you will offer a brief orientation as described on the next two slides. This should only take 5 or 10 minutes and is just to make sure competitors are present and have their supplies/paperwork/etc.

Health Professionals & Emergency Preparedness Events All Health Professions & Emergency Preparedness Events are held Tuesday from 8a-noon. Check your Event Summary for any changes! You have received a brief description of your event via email that explains which room your event will be held and other judges/personnel in your event Once you enter your event room and the students are assembled, you will offer a brief orientation as described on the next two slides. This should only take 5 or 10 minutes and is just to make sure competitors are present and have their supplies/paperwork/etc.

Competitor Orientation Competitors are responsible for bringing EVENT GUIDELINES and will show you they have either a paper copy or a copy on their phone. For certain events, the students will also have a STEM Premiere registration receipt. Welcome competitors to your event. Introduce yourself and other judges, timekeepers, etc. You have a Competitor list in your packet. Do a roll-call of each competitor. If a competitor is not in attendance, draw a line through their name. Ask if competitors have any questions about the event. All events have assigned time cards per team or individual. Hand out time cards, The competitor(s) return to the event room at their assigned time to compete.

Competitor orientation If your event has a SECRET SCENARIO, explain that the competitors will receive their written scenario upon entering the event room at their specified time These are to be kept secret and not shared with other competitors. Students will be disqualified for sharing this information with other students If your event requires set-up time or drawing, explain how long the competitors have. Health Career Display is shortened from 30 minutes to 15 minutes for set-up, Extemp Health Poster drawing time will be 2 ½ hours, leaving ½ hour for judges to review Events that require a notebook or other visuals that judges will review have additional guidelines.

Scoring rubrics Every HOSA Competitive Event has a scoring rubric. A sample of the scoring rubric for your event was on the second page of the event summary sent via email. PLEASE CONTACT RENEE IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO REVIEW THIS PRIOR TO THE EVENT. Her contact number is on the first slide. As a healthcare professional, you may not agree with the actual steps listed on each rubric. These rubrics were designed by National HOSA-Future Health Professionals, and students will be held to these procedures if they win at the state level and choose to go to the International Competition. Please circle the number YOU feel is accurate. You will be combining your total score with other judges for an average score.

Competitive event supplies Competitors and their Advisors received a list of the supplies they must bring to each event. If a student does not have the appropriate supplies, they may ask a fellow competitor to borrow items, but it is up to their fellow students whether they share or not Yes, you can allow the student to compete, but they will be disqualified from receiving an award for not being prepared to compete We will have major equipment/supplies ready for pick up in the Gallery Room when you check in. We will also have students available to assist with carrying these items to your event room

Wrapping up your event Add up individual judge scores first Write each judge’s total score for each competitor on the Tally Sheet NOTE! Some events will also have a test score added to this tally sheet when it is returned to the Gallery Room for a final score. Be sure to have the Event host return all props/equipment to the Gallery Room Please take a moment to fill out the Judge Evaluation. We count on your input to make the following year’s competition even better. Bring ALL paperwork back to the Gallery Room before you leave!
