World Regions Aim: What is geography? Do Now: What is the difference between primary and secondary sources?

Geography Geography – the study of Earth, how it shapes people’s lives and how it is shaped by people. How does geography affect your life? How do we affect geography?

People and Geography Geography affects: People affect geography Weather and climate Animals *Agriculture* Landforms – mountains, rivers, lakes, forests People affect geography

Regions Region – an area with common features that sets it apart from other areas.

Reading Maps Aim: How does latitude and longitude help us read maps? Do Now: Locate Peru on your maps

Longitude and Latitude Latitude – lines on a map that run east and west. These lines are called parallels. Like a ladder Equator – the midpoint for latitude Longitude – lines on a map that run north and south. These lines are called meridians. Prime Meridian – the midpoint for longitude

Using Degrees Degrees – unit of measurement that describes the distance between lines of latitude and longitude Example 60⁰N Global grid – makes it possible to pinpoint exact locations on a map. 38⁰ N, 77⁰ W Latitude, Longitude

Directions Cardinal directions – north, south, east, and west Intermediate directions – northwest, northeast, southwest, and southeast

Main Ideas Latitude and longitude are used to organize maps They are also used so we have a universal way to read maps.

Steps to finding locations using latitude and longitude: Example 45⁰ N, 120⁰ W Start at the equator to find latitude. Go North 45⁰. Put a dot on that line. Start at the Prime Meridian to find longitude. Go West 120⁰. Put a dot on that line. Find where those two lines meet. *Latitude is always North or South and is always the first number Longitude is always West or East and is always the second number.

Do Now- open Finding Latitude and Longitude worksheet. Answer: Reading Maps Do Now- open Finding Latitude and Longitude worksheet. Answer: What is the equator? What is the prime meridian?
