Presentation transcript:

Fire Extinguisher Training The Code of Federal Regulations states that “Where the employer has provided portable fire extinguishers for employee use in the workplace, the employer shall also provide an educational program to familiarize employees with the general principals of the fire extinguisher use and the hazards involved with incipient stage fire fighting.” In an effort to meet this requirement we will spend the next few minutes reviewing the types and uses of fire extinguisher. Fire Extinguisher Training

Four things must be present at the same time in order to produce fire: Enough oxygen to sustain combustion, Enough heat to raise the material to its ignition temperature, Some sort of fuel or combustible material, and The chemical, exothermic reaction that is fire. Essentially, fire extinguishers put out fire by taking away one or more elements of the fire triangle/tetrahedron. In order to understand how fire extinguishers work, you first need to know a little bit about fire. Four things must be present at the same time in order to produce fire: Enough oxygen to sustain combustion, Enough heat to raise the material to its ignition temperature, Some sort of fuel or combustible material, and The chemical, exothermic reaction that is fire. Take any of these four things away and the fire will be extinguished. Fire safety, at its most basic, is based upon the principle of keeping fuel sources and ignition sources separate.

Fire Hazards: Electrical Abuse One major fire hazard is electrical abuse. Electrical "octopuses" can overload circuits and result in fire.

Fire Hazards: Electrical Abuse Use only 15 amp fused power strips. Replace damaged wires and outlets immediately. Match appliance power requirements to circuit power. Size of extension cord should match appliance power cord to prevent overheating. Use only 15 amp fused power strips. Replace damaged wires and outlets immediately. Match appliance power requirements to circuit power. And, match power cords to the size of extension cords to prevent overheating.

Fire Hazards: Electrical Abuse Extension cords are not intended for "permanent" installations. Residential style brown & white extension cords are NOT acceptable in our facilities.

Fire Doors Never prop open fire doors with wedges or other objects. The purpose of these doors is to prevent smoke and heat from traveling up stairwells and along corridors. Never prop open fire doors with wedges or other objects. The purpose of these doors is to prevent smoke and heat from traveling up stairwells and along corridors.

Mechanical & Electrical Closets Storage of combustibles in mechanical/electrical service closets is prohibited. Blocked electrical panels are a violation of the fire code There should be a 3’ clearance around all electrical panels

Class A (Pressurized Water) Class B (Carbon Dioxide) Different types of fire extinguishers are designed to fight different classes of fire. Class A (Pressurized Water) Class B (Carbon Dioxide) Class C (Dry Chemical) Class ABC (Graphite-type Chemical) Different types of fire extinguishers are designed to fight different classes of fire. Some common types of fire extinguishers are: -Class A Extinguishers, which are pressurized water extinguishers designed for wood, paper or cloth fires only. -Class B or Carbon Dioxide Extinguishers are designed for Class B (flammable liquid) and Class C (electrical) fires. -Class C or Dry Chemical Extinguishers are designed for Class C or electrical fires only.

Class ABC Extinguishers "ABC" indicates that they are designed to extinguish Class A, B, and C fires ABC extinguishers are red and range in size from 5 lbs to 20 lbs Read the labels and know their locations! Most of the extinguishers in our facilities are Class ABC Extinguishers that contain dry graphite-type chemical. -"ABC" indicates that they are designed to extinguish Class A, B, and C fires -ABC extinguishers are red and range in size from 5 lbs to 20 lbs -They put out fire by coating the fuel with a thin layer of dust, separating the fuel from the oxygen in the air. -The powder also works to interrupt the chemical reaction of fire, so these extinguishers are extremely effective at putting out fire.

-Now that you understand what is necessary to produce a fire… -And you know how to use a fire extinguisher… -You need to know where to find a fire extinguisher.

-Look for the red dots to locate the 34 fire extinguishers at Perquimans Central School.

Can you find all 30 extinguishers at Hertford Grammar School?

Look for the 45 extinguishers at Perquimans County Middle School.

There are a total of 86 extinguishers here at PCHS.
