Presentation transcript:

Humanism During the Renaissance Learning Target 7.46 I can describe how humanism led to a revival of classical learning and fostered a new interest in the arts, including a balance between intellect and religious faith.

Humanism Really an old idea from Ancient Greece and Rome Based on Socrates’ and Plato’s ideas of observation and reasoning Idea that man, not God, was the center of the universe Man controls his own destiny Man can learn about and understand his world by observation and reason without God’s help Helped spark a new age of secular learning and the development of early modern schools and universities Led many people to question both governments and the institutional Church 2 2

Contributions to Humanism Muslim Scholars They knew the classical Greek and Roman writings. They passed on their knowledge to Western Europeans. Francesco Petrarch He studied Roman writers and wrote biographies of famous Romans. He found old Latin manuscripts in monasteries. He wrote sonnets in the vernacular (everyday) language so more people could read them.

Include information about how humanism was a balance between intellect and religious faith. You may use your notes, chart, and textbook (pages 293-296) to help you develop your paragraph. Do NOT copy information directly!
