Examples of RAGES for question: Which story element used by the author is the most important to the outcome of the story, “Lady or the Tiger”?

X Characterization  GOOD  BAD The most important element the author uses is characterization. The king, princess, and commoner are all described using characterization. In the story, “He is a man of enthusiasm and authority.” In other words, the author is revealing the character of the king. Therefore, the most important element is characterization. X  GOOD  BAD

X Characterization  GOOD  BAD The story element used by the author that is the most important to the outcome of the story, “Lady or the Tiger” is characterization. Without the characterization of the princess, the reader would not understand why she questioned her decision. In “Lady or the Tiger,” Frank Stockton states, “the semi-barbaric king had a beautiful daughter with a soul as fervent and imperious as his own.” This shows the reader the daughter’s nature. Therefore, characterization is the most important element to the outcome because it reveals the character of the princess which influences her decision in the end. X  GOOD  BAD

Conflict The story element used by the author that is most important is conflict. This is because conflict is shown throughout the story. In the story, the princess falls in love with a commoner, but that is not allowed so the king sentences the man to his arena to either be eaten by a tiger or married to a lady. As a result, this story is about the conflict between the king and the commoner because the princess fell in love with him. Therefore, conflict is the most important element used by the author. X  GOOD  BAD

Conflict The story element that is most important to the outcome of the story, “Lady or the Tiger” is conflict. The conflict of the princess and her decision was the most important because it helps the audience decide if she chose the lady or the tiger. In “Lady or the Tiger,” Frank Stockton states, “How often, in her waking hours and in her dreams, had she thought of the horror of her lover opening the door on the other side of which waited the cruel fangs of the tiger? But how much more often had she thought of him at the other door!” In other words, the princess was struggling with an internal conflict with herself that would decide her lover’s fate. Therefore, the most important story element for the outcome of the story is the internal conflict the princess has. X  GOOD  BAD
