Visiting Schools Schedule a campus visit at least two weeks in advance for large public universities! Counselor will set up visit RHS allows seniors to take two days. Juniors may take one day. Need more days? Visit on in-service days or a half day! Tips for college visits Go in the fall of senior year Go when the college is in session Write out questions Take parents with you!

Getting into your school Apply for admission Fees vary from $0 to $200 Apply to your top 3-4 schools If you are sure of your choice, apply early (by October 1) Remember: Only a college or university will require an ACT!

Getting into Your School (continued) Public University Admission requirements: Qualified Admission curriculum with a “C” average AND one of the following: Top 1/3 of class in GPA OR ACT of 21 or higher(KU-3.25 GPA) What if I don’t meet any of those requirements? Apply early in senior year(10% window) or Consider starting at a Community College, then transfer

Getting into your school (continued) Apply for scholarships October 1 or January 15 Most won’t consider you for scholarships until you apply for admission Send your transcripts & ACT scores to schools when you apply for admission. See your counselor!

Other Admissions requirements Community Colleges- High School diploma required Technical Schools – High School diploma preferred Military – High School Diploma required/preferred

Once you have made a decision Arrange for housing Check on dates for testing and pre-enrollment Notify other schools you have made a final choice (awards letters) Have federal Financial aid sent to the school (March 1-priority deadline) Start a file with info from the school

Important Points to Ponder Testing College Credit in high school Helpful tips

Testing - PSAT PSAT- Practice SAT May be taken by 10th or 11th graders each November 11th grade scores determine National Merit Scholars (Top 1% in U.S.)

Testing - ACT Accepted at all public Kansas Colleges Take ACT in 11th grade (Spring) and 12th grade (Fall) Offered at RHS in April, June, October & December Cost: $42.50 per test ACT online Prep & booklet - Free for the asking! KSU & WSU offer a prep session each spring for 10th & 11th graders

Testing - SAT SAT I & SAT II - Required by some schools out-of-state SAT I - verbal and math test SAT II - subject tests - Biology, German, English etc. Either the SAT or ACT is required for acceptance into any four year college in Kansas

College credit at RHS Barton County Community College College Advantage/dual credit classes College Algebra, English Comp I & II, Gen Psychology, Public Speaking, and Cert Nurse Aide Taught by RHS teacher or via ITV Will transfer to all state universities in Kansas, but…… Check program requirements under “Prospective Students” Outreach (night classes) also available

College Credit at RHS AP Classes – AP Calculus, AP English & AP Government For 3-6 hours of college credit $93 per test Score 3 or higher on a scale of 1-5 Check your college for more info.

College credit 101 College credit is based on the amount of seat time for one class during one week. A three credit hour class may meet from 9-9:50am every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the semester

Some Helpful tips… *Check the RHS Counselor’s web site www.usd407.org Under “RHS” select “Counselor” *Get involved, volunteer, try leadership roles *Collect clippings, certificates etc. *Start a “College file” Make copies of paper work! *Create a resume- Required for some scholarships *Use the Kansas Career Pipeline for college and career research
