Presentation transcript:

Japan’s Earthquake 2011

What Is an Earthquake ? A sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the earth's crust or volcanic action.

What Happens in an Earthquake? Buildings then sway and topple, and fires may start as gas and electricity lines are ripped apart.

Why does Japan have so many earthquakes ? Japan has so many earthquakes because there are so many different tectonic plates (layers of the earth's crust) underneath it and each plate keeps rubbing with the other plates.

Recent Major Earthquakes of Japan Year Name Degrees People Deaths 1948 Fukui 7.1 3769 1995 Kobe 6.8 6700 2011 Tohoku 9.1 15234
