SUGGESTIONS FROM THE SEMINARS Read the essay out loud Use peer support to proof read / discuss and generally help Make use of time management techniques Compile the bibliography / reference list as you go along Be confident Be persuasive Include your own experience where it contributes to the argument. Making the writing flow – build through a series of notes / drafts Star Harvard referencing from the beginning Finding reading – use the library ‘search everything’ tab and Google Scholar and learn how to search precisely Assessment 1

Assessment 1 Some tips for your first essay What change? List possible changes you are thinking of Rearrange them in order of priority One by one .. What are the arguments for each change? What counter arguments are there? What reading supports your claims? Focussed Reading Look at start / end / conclusion / headings How can this reading be used for your change? Discard it if not … do not read further Add bibliographical details to your list and Harvard Reference them Assessment 1

Assessment 1 Some tips for your first essay A possible structure Introduce the essay, the context and the proposed change What are the arguments for this change What counter arguments are there? Conclusion Look for further reading from authors read so far and in the bibliography of articles / chapters you have already read Use sources and ideas from your previous studies / other modules Make sure you send Jim a short piece for general feedback Assessment 1

Assessment 1 Academic writing Avoid unsupported statements e.g. ‘it is clear that’; ‘much research argues that’; ‘children learn better’; ‘one can assume’ Avoid over colloquial language / overstatement e.g. ‘loads’; ‘huge’; ‘always’; ‘surely’ When you use a source – reference it! Use news items / general websites sparingly e.g. the Conversation Assessment 1
