Homework and Important Dates Book Notes and Vocab. Due 9/28 Bell work What are the primary colors? What do you know about light and the way it behaves? One sentence minimum Date Monday September 25th Agenda Light Note Taking Learning Targets I can describe what determines the color and explain the difference between mixing light and pigment. I can explain why light rays are reflected, bent, absorbed or transmitted when they enter a medium at an angle. Homework and Important Dates Book Notes and Vocab. Due 9/28

Light and Color What is light? Light is a form of electromagnetic radiation that is emitted from a high energy source such as a star or a light bulb. When particles vibrate at a high enough speed, they will produce visible light energy. In a star, light is a product of nuclear energy. In a light bulb, electricity is being transmitted through a wire until it glows. When light is emitted, it is white. When there is no light, then objects will appear black.

Light and Color What is light? Light travels in waves. Visible light can be broken into a spectrum based on the wavelength. Red has a longer wavelength. Blue has a shorter wavelength. The colors formed create a rainbow when separated by wavelength.

Light and Color How does light travel? Light travels in waves travelling in a straight line radiating from its source in a forward direction.

Light and Color How does light interact with objects? When light strikes an object, the light can be reflected, transmitted, or absorbed. These sunglasses are reflecting some light. As you can see through them, they are letting some light through. BUT, the image appears darker, so some light is being absorbed.

Light and Color Classifying materials Most materials can be classified as transparent, translucent, or opaque based on what happens to light that strikes the material. All light pass through without being scattered. Some light passes through and it is scattered. NO light passes through. It may cause a shadow. Transparent Translucent Opaque Window Air Frosted glass Waxed paper Walls Wood

Light and Color What determines color? The color of an opaque object is the color of the light it reflects. Objects may appear a different color if you look at them under different colored lights or filters.

Light and Color What determines color? Materials that are transparent or translucent allow only certain colors of light to pass through them. The color of a transparent or translucent object is the color of the light it transmits. Ex. When white shines through transparent blue glass, the glass appears blue because it transmits blue light.

Light and Color Light Pigment How do colors combine? green + red = yellow green + blue = cyan red + blue = magenta Pigment yellow + magenta = red yellow + cyan = green magenta + cyan = blue

Light and Color Reflection The two ways in which a surface can reflect light are regular reflection and diffuse reflection. Regular Parallel rays of light hit a smooth surface. All the light rays reflect at the same angle so you see a clear image.

Light and Color Reflection Diffuse Parallel rays of light hit an uneven surface. Each light ray reflects at different angles. You either don’t see an image or the image is not clear.

Light and Color Reflection and Mirrors There are two types of images produced by a mirror. A virtual image forms where light seems to come from. Your image appears to be behind the mirror. The image is also reversed. A real image forms when light rays actually meet. It can be projected onto a surface. Real images are upside down.

Light and Color Reflection and Mirrors Curved mirrors have a focal point where the light rays meet. A concave mirror curves inward and can produce a real or virtual image A convex mirror curves outward and produces a virtual image that is always smaller than the object.

Light and Color Transmission of light When light passes through a material, the path will change. The wave bends at the surface because it changes speed. This is because light travels differently through each material. As it passes from surface to the next, it is refracted. This is why a straw appears to bend in a glass of water. A prism will bend the light so that each wavelength of color separates to form a rainbow.
