Rapid Recall Activities

Retention of facts is key with the New Curriculum...... Rolling Dice: Rolling a 10-sided dice and making number bonds to 10 Adding numbers rolled to make 10: 5 + 4 = 9 + 5 = 14 – 6 = 8 ....... Change to 20-sided dice to make 100 etc.... Ideal for Y2 – rolling a die to make 0 – involves negative numbers Multiples – roll die add or subtract to make a multiple of 7 Amendments: How many multiples can you hit Starting point is ’50’ Must get 5 multiples of 7 etc... Change type of dice used All only take only 2 mins – children can work independently and easily resourced

In pairs using 2 10-sided dice If you roll 1 and 5 you could use as 15 or 51 Then ½ or double – this makes your running score Partner must keep running total Can stick if near 100 / out if bust. Questions can reinforce vocabulary, understanding of mathematical concepts and mental calculation strategies. The questions you ask will obviously depend upon the age and ability of the class. Here are a few examples: 20 15 10 5 7 19 8 13 1 3 6 12 17 14 16 2 4 18

Can you find an odd number? How do you know? Can you find an even number bigger than 10. How do you know? My target number is 20. Can you find two numbers that have a sum of 20? Can you multiply two numbers to make 20? Which numbers are factors of 20? Can you find a prime number? Can you find a square number? What is a square number? Can you add all the numbers in the first row? Can you explain how you did this? Which row has the greatest total? Can you round each number to the nearest 10? How many numbers round to 10? How many numbers round to 20? Can you increase each number by 49? Can you decrease each number by 19? How did you work it out? Can you double each number? What happens if the halve each number? Can you divide each number by 2? Which numbers have a remainder? Can you divide each number by 3? Which numbers have a remainder? Why? Divide each number by 10. Can you find a tenth of each number? Can you explain what happens? Multiply each number by 100. How did you work out the answer?

You can also decide on a target number, then point to a number on the board and ask the children how they could reach your target number. For example if your target number was 100 and you pointed to number 19 responses could be: You add 81 You add 100 and subtract 19 You add 1 and then 80   This can easily be extended. You can ask children for a one step operation (add 81); You can ask for a two step operation (add 31 and double it); You can insist that they must use multiplication (e.g. add 1 and multiply by 5); You can ask for three steps but the first step has to be multiplication (multiply by 2, add 12 and then double it). Finally you can also have a mystery number which the children have to discover. Subtraction War : Deal out the cards Each player flips over their top two cards and subtracts the lower card from the higher. The player with the highest result wins the battle. and collects all the other cards. The player that ends the game with all the cards wins Subtraction War. Make 25: The object of the game is to have a hand totalling 25 while using only five cards. To play, deal each child five cards face down. The remaining cards are placed in the centre of the group with the top card turned up. The children will take turns picking up and discarding one card until they have reached a total sum of twenty-five. If a player has a hand totalling 25 using only five cards, they will immediately call out “25″. Once a player has called out their hand, the other players will receive one more turn to complete their hands.

Focus on learning times tables.... If using speed challenge children must work through answers in order otherwise they never actually practise the ones they need to! If they don’t know the answer they have to find it out – ie. get up and look at chart
