Maths Workshop Laura chooses a number less than 100. She divides it by 3 and then subtracts 11. She divides this result by 2. Her answer is 10.5. what was the number she started with? Addition and Subtraction Year 5-6

What’s the plan? Overview of changes in maths curriculum and assessment procedures 2016 What your child will be learning in class and how Supporting your child at home

Aims of the new Curriculum 2014 Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics….....Develop conceptual understanding …..ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately...reason mathermaitcally...solve problems

Assessment 2016 – current Y6 Arithmetic –one test paper; 30 minutes –40 marks –Context free calculations, most of which will be worth one mark –Partial marks will be awarded for corrects working where the final answer is wrong –No marks will be given for use of grid method or chunking

Assessment 2016 – current Y6 Mathematical reasoning –two test papers; 40 minutes per paper –35 marks per paper –Seb had some cherries. Every day he ate 10 cherries and gave 5 away. After he gave the last 5 cherries away, he had eaten 40 cherries altogether. How many cherries did Seb have at the start?

Changes in the Maths Curriculum When we were younger = practising methods But, methods without understanding = errors 9 years old and I already hate maths

Changes in the Maths Curriculum New curriculum = methods + understanding Methods (procedural fluency) Understanding (conceptual understanding) These must be taught: –in parallel –with manipulatives –at the right stage Raised expectations Tutor Warning

Changes in the Maths Curriculum

Child led learning - layers Hundreds tens and ones NOT hundreds tens and units! ‘Regrouping’ not ‘borrowing’ or ‘exchanging’

Bar models A bar model is a pictorial representation of a calculation problem that helps a pupil to visualise the problem and to identify where the unknown quantity is.

Addition Subtraction Multiplication Division

Changes in the Maths Curriculum

Addition

Bar model for addition 77+45 =

Addition 77+45

Addition of decimals Bar model? Common error when calculating?

Subtraction

Note that the number line method should still be modelled as part of a mental maths strategy When calculating with time and finding time differences, the numberline method should be used EVERY TIME.

Subtraction 532 – 254 Bar model? Use PV counters

Subtraction with decimals Money can provide a useful context for subtraction with decimals £24.43 - £12.29 = Bar model?

Supporting your child at home Play games You can practise calculation if you wish Homework – Praise. Don’t panic! Ask your child to explain everything

Supporting your child at home Stuck in the Mud –Roll 5 dice. If 2 or 5 is rolled, discard the 2s and 5s and roll remaining dice. –Repeat until there are no 2s or 5s rolled. –Add up these dice and add this to your score –5 rounds. Highest score at the end wins.

Supporting your child at home Tug of War –Start at 25. Take it in turns to roll the dice. –One player will add their score to 25, the other will take it away from 25. –The person subtracting wants to get to 0. The ‘adder’ wants to get to 50. –Repeat until the score reaches 0 or 50.

Supporting your child at home Recognising shapes and talking about the properties of these shapes (e.g. buildings, windows, food packaging etc. talk about angles, vertices, faces, edges) Helping in the kitchen (e.g. weighing ingredients, reading scales, time duration, volume of liquids etc.) Calculation with the food shop – add and subtract amounts on the shopping bill. Make up some problems with the items bought once at home

Supporting your child at home Helping in the supermarket (e.g. paying and change, weighed fruit and vegetables, calculating better value, discounts, percentages etc.) CDs/Games for learning times tables Take and compare measurements when DIY shopping (e.g. measuring spaces for curtains, furniture, area for carpets, wall paper etc.) Tell the time/use timetables (e.g. bus times Sky TV guide)
