Earth and Environmental What You and Your Student Should Expect

Welcome Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year. I wanted to lets you know how pleased and delighted I am to work with your student in science this year. Earth & Environmental Science focuses on the Earth, its structure, its origins, the hydrosphere, atmosphere, lithosphere and the sustainability of Earth. I look forward to partnering with you to insure that your student has an incredible learning experience.

Class Structure This course combines 8th grade science material with 9th grade Earth and Environmental science. The class is technology based so it is important that your student has access to computer daily in order to complete homework. The class is very fast paced and your student will have homework every night except Fridays and holidays. The students are expected to complete projects during this class. They will have 6 projects this year. 3 projects are out of class projects and 3 are in class projects.

Class Structure This class is a blended learning reach class. What that means is your student will be with me one day and Ms. Nowack the next. They will still be learning the same material no matter their location. This class will utilize several different learning methods. It will include webquest, readings with questions, and videos with questions, virtual labs, Moby Max, Quizlet, projects and hands on labs while incorporating global concepts, collaboration and communication. The students’ material is located within Canvas.

Class Structure The class is very fast paced class that requires students to be self-disciplined and responsible. Students who are not completing work on time will quickly fall behind and not be able to catch up this year. This type of class is not suited to some students learning styles or need of structured classroom environment.

Class Importance This is a high school level course. The students will receive a high school science credit. The grade will appear on the students high school transcripts that are sent to colleges. The students are required to take the 8th grade science EOG and the Earth and Environmental NCFE( Counts for 25% of students overall grade)

Units of Study Unit 1 Chemistry Unit 5 Ecology Unit 2 Energy Unit 6 Weather Unit 3 Lithosphere Unit 7 Astronomy Unit 4 Hydrosphere Unit 8 Molecular Biology

Communication I will be sending a weekly email that has information about what we will study the next week and important announcements. I will send other emails that could include project assignment dates and due dates as well as test dates. If you have any questions please email me, I will answer within a few hours.
