Convert Unit Rates Lesson 1.3

Essential Question How can you show that two objects are proportional?

CCSS 7.RP.2 and 7.RP.3

Vocabulary Unit Ratio = Like a unit rate, it’s a ratio in which the denominator is 1 unit - The numerator and denominator of unit ratios are equal (value equals 1) Examples: 12 inches 16 ounces 1 foot 1 pound

Dimensional Analysis = The process of including units of measure as factors when you compute unit conversions

Customary Units of Measure Smaller Larger 12 inches 1 foot 16 ounces 1 pound 8 pints 1 gallon 3 feet 1 yard 5,280 feet 1 mile

Metric Units of Measure Smaller Larger 100 centimeters 1 meter 1000 grams 1 kilogram 1000 milliliters 1 liter 10 millimeters 1 centimeter 1000 milligrams 1 gram

Steps to Convert Rates (Renaming using different units) Multiply by a unit ratio or its reciprocal (include the units in your computation) to eliminate units being converted (cross reduce)

Examples 1) A gull can fly at a speed of 22 miles per hour. About how many feet per hour can the gull fly?

2) An AMTRAK train travels at 125 miles per hour 2) An AMTRAK train travels at 125 miles per hour. Convert the speed to miles per minute. Round to the nearest tenth.

3) The average speed of one team in a relay race is about 10 miles per hour. What is this speed in feet per second?
