How to optimize visual performance?
Optimal performance: contrast VS Projection: “black”created by making white brighter LED screen: “black”is the nature of the product. White created by lighting up
Optimal performance: contrast Background color influences performance of the transparent display
Optimal performance: content
Resolution : setting expectations © 2012 Barco LiveDots – All rights reserved
Optimal performance: content Content is King!
Optimal performance: Viewing distance pixel pitch (mm) ¤ m x2 Optimal: pixel pitch (mm) ¤ m Minimal: height of screen x 30 Miximal: Rule of tumb!
Optimal performance: Transparancy Transparancy and fill factor are inverse related. The vertical distance between strips has a direct impact on both image quality and transparancy. In case there is a light colored background, the contrast will be affected as well.
Optimal performance: H+V pixel pitch It is not required to have the vertical and horizontal pixel pitch the same. Empty spaces are being reconstructed by the human brain.
Optimal performance: The human brain Moving content has better performance compared to steady images If content moves from a high resolution area to a low resolution area, the human brain keeps on seeing the full image, even though a lot of information is missing

Point where ½ of initial brightness is reached generally used terms LED Light Emitting Diode Pixel pitch distance between 2 pixels Candela (cd) Base unit of luminous intensity power emitted by a light source in a particular direction NIT value Cd/m2 Viewing angle Point where ½ of initial brightness is reached Point where noticeable discoloration is observed Point where the image is still visible pixel
Nomenclature (generally used terms) Contrast ratio Difference in measured brightness between a full, white image and no image (off). The higher the contrast ratio, the better the viewability of the screen / percieved image quality Color temperature Normalized combination of Red, Green and Blue (white) 8500K: cold white 2800K: warm white Bits / color Different steps for the individual colors 16 bits = 216 = 65536 different steps 0= black, 65536= full brightness 16 bit/color = 216 x 216 x 216 = 281 trillion combinations Dimming Reducing R, G, B values towars 0 = introducing noticeable color steps Barco uses seperate dimming (8 bit)
Power consumption Typical LED lifetime Maximum power Basis for power provision calculations Typical power consumption Basis for estimation of power consumption over time Measured based on test content + variance in brightness Estmation, not the basis for comparison Typical LED lifetime Light output gradually decreases Typical lifetime = 50% of inital brightness, used at typical brightness (+/- 30%)
Why is IP-testing not enough? Typhoon testing Why is IP-testing not enough? Only impact of water and dust There is much more products suffer from Test takes only 3 minutes Aging of products not taken into account

The importance of certification: EMC (ElectroMagnetic Compatibility) Ability of an equipment or system to function satisfactorily in its electromagnetic environment without introducing intolerable electromagnetic disturbances to anything in that environment
The importance of certification EMC
Through Hole versus SMD 2 types of LEDs Through-Hole (TH) Surface Mounted Diode (SMD) TH At least one LED per color (Red, Green, Blue) Sometimes a 4th or even 5th LED is added to: Increase brightness Used for larger pitches (>10mm) -> Outdoor applications SMD 3 colors in one package Allows wider viewing angles (less color shift) Allows shorter viewing distances (color mixing happens earlier) Used for smaller pitches (<10mm) -> Indoor applications “Black silicon resin” or “Black package” to increase contrast TH SMD 10 cd @ 0,75W 2,5 cd @ 0,75W
