Presentation transcript:

Key Questions What do we mean by health and also wellbeing? Does it have an impact on outcomes for us all? What does our knowledge of child development teach us about health and wellbeing? Understanding wellbeing is closely linked to understanding happiness – how can we `teach` this?

Reflecting on our own wellbeing On your own…. Complete the `wellbeing` wheel, giving yourself a rough score on where you are doing well or need to improve….. Then, with a partner, talk through your scores and see if you can each agree on a plan to improve at least one area…….. Take care in managing the discussion as some reflections could be very personal

Wheel of wellbeing 5’ Take feedback

Children’s wellbeing is influenced by a range of factors and includes their subjective feelings as well as social, physical and psychological aspects of their lives. Consequently schools are key places for shaping general wellbeing. The health and wellbeing of children and young people contributes to their ability to benefit from good quality teaching and to achieve their full academic potential. The Link between pupil health and wellbeing and attainment `– Public Health England report Nov 2014 In discussion groups – what are the key factors that affect the wellbeing of pupils in your school? Sort them into those you can affect and those that are outside your control. Now share those lists with other groups and ask for school-based solutions to those that are in the list titled `out of our control`

An 11% boost in results in standardised achievement tests has been linked to school programmes that directly improve pupils’ social and emotional learning Whole-school approaches to social and emotional learning, universally implemented for all pupils, strongly correlate with higher attainment The Link between pupil health and wellbeing and attainment `– Public Health England report Nov 2014 In discussion – highlight the results that……. a focus on social and emotional learning does have a direct impact on attainment

In discussion…….What interests or surprises you about this chart? What can we learn about the links between material wealth and wellbeing? Do you have any views on why this might be?

To finish - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DQ9DrReE-uo Time to complete reflective journal on the key learning from the session. Bananarama `It ain`t what you do…..`

Five steps to mental wellbeing…. This is revisiting the start of a discussion in module 1 where the group discussed how wellbeing would affect teachers in school and the learning of pupils. The next 5 slides give the group a chance to reflect on their personal situations, their school situation and how to improve on any aspects of these.

Connect  Connect with the people around you: your family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. Spend time developing these relationships. Reflections….

Be active  You don't have to go to the gym. Take a walk, go cycling or play a game of football. Reflections….

Keep learning  Learning new skills can give a sense of achievement and a new confidence. Reflections….

Give to others  Even the smallest act can count, whether it's a smile, a thank you or a kind word, and can improve your mental wellbeing Reflections….

Take notice   Be more aware of the present moment, your thoughts and feelings, your body and the world around you Reflections….

The link between physical and mental health Let`s now reflect on some of the ways we can affect the physical wellbeing of staff as well as pupils in school……

`Anyone who has ever smoked, drank alcohol, tea or coffee or eaten chocolate knows that such products can improve one’s mood, at least a little and temporarily. What seems to be less common is an understanding that some foods can have a lasting influence on mood and mental wellbeing because of the impact they have on the structure and function of the brain.` Feeding Minds - The impact of food on mental health ( Mental Health Foundation, 2006) Personal comments on this? Effects of food in a small way?
