ESL- Structural Lesson Plan Intermediate Level By Gilmar Siza

Objective To show the use the simple present.

Warm-up The teacher will prepare a lyric (song) which contains verbs in the simple present. Underline all the verbs and in each verb write something that you want the student to do. (e.g. Dance, Jump, Hug Someone, etc.) The teacher will ask the students to stand up and go around to make a circle. The teacher will pass on a hand-out with a song. The teacher will play the music and every time the student listen and recognize his/her verb he/she will do what is required for him/her to do. Warm-up will take from 20-30 minutes.

Rule The verb like is followed by the infinitive form of the verb. Examples: What do you like to do on the weekend? I like to read.

Presentation Introduce like to Tell about yourself and a friend. For example: I like to study English. My brother Gerardo likes to play soccer. Make sentences with forms of like to. Have students to repeat.

Examples I like to (eat). You like to (study). She likes to (watch TV). He likes to (play soccer). We like to (sing). They like to (draw).

Production # 1 Beanbag Toss Have students toss a beanbag back and forth. The student to whom the beanbag is tossed names an activity he or she likes to do. Student 1: I like to swim. Student 2: I like to play soccer. Student 3: I like to watch TV.

Production # 2 Grammar Chain Start the chain game: Teacher: I like to go to church on the weekend. (to a Student A): What do you like to do? Student A must answer and ask Student B, who then continues the chain.

Examples Student A: I like to watch TV. (to Student B): What do you like to do? Student B: I like to play cards. (to Student C): What do you like to do? etc.

Practice Put the following on the board: I like to _______ on the weekend. He/She likes to ________ on the weekend. We both like to _______ on the weekend. Divide the class into pairs. Have students interview each other about what they like to do on the weekend.

Examples I like to go to the beach on the weekend. She likes to go hiking on the weekend. We both like to go jogging on the weekend.
